The epidemiological investigation is ongoing. The first time H5N1 occurred in Israel was in March 2006 revealing 9 outbreaks. Since then, all the outbreaks that occurred in commercial flocks were also in March (2011, 2012) except one outbreak that took place in January 2010, in the same region of the present outbreak (distance of 8 kilometers). The disease had been also diagnosed in a kindergarden’s minizoo at the end of December 2007, 3 kilometers from the present outbreak. This area has numerous water ponds with water birds wintering in them. The culling of all the flocks is ongoing. Backyard birds in the village will also be culled.

Bird Flu: 20,000 Fowl to be Destroyed in Binyamina Commercial Coop

Approximately 20,000 chickens will be destroyed in a commercial poultry farm in Binyamina after they were diagnosed as having been infected with bird flu (avian flu), the Ministry of Agriculture reported today (Friday) after assessing the situation.

The infected coops are located several kilometers from the coops located Moshav Aviel, near Hadera, where earlier this week thousands of virus-infected turkeys were destroyed.

It is thought that the virus was spread by pelicans that were wandering through the area, which has now been closed off.

Epidemiological comments
The epidemiological investigation is ongoing. The first time H5N1 occurred in Israel was in March 2006 revealing 9 outbreaks. Since then, all the outbreaks that occurred in commercial flocks were also in March (2011, 2012) except one outbreak that took place in January 2010, in the same region of the Aviel's outbreak (distance of 10 kilometers). The disease had been also diagnosed in a kindergarden?s minizoo at the end of December 2007, 3 kilometers from the Aviel's outbreak. This area has numerous water ponds with water birds wintering in them. Backyard birds in the village have also been culled. A few days later, two additional outbreaks have been diagnosed in the same region as described in the report. The culling of the flocks has been terminated.

A new case of bird flu was discovered at a turkey coop containing 37,000 at Kfar Vitkin, near Netanya, the Agriculture Ministry reported Monday.

In accordance with protocal, the birds infected with the H5N1 avian flu will be killed and buried in order to prevent the disease from spreading.
