An 11-month-old infant with no underlying conditions, who had not yet been vaccinated, died on Thursday in Jerusalem from measles complications, according to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

The case comes as health authorities report most of Israel’s recent measles fatalities were healthy, unvaccinated infants.

The infant was transferred on Wednesday to Hadassah Ein Kerem from another hospital in critical condition, the hospital said. She was connected to an ECMO machine as the pediatric intensive care team fought for her life, but her condition deteriorated, and she was pronounced dead on Thursday evening...

After cases of infection in Haredi concentrations: These are the cities that have been designated as measles outbreak hotspots
Haredim 10
January 22, 2026

After several cases of local infection: The Ministry of Health today (Thursday) declared Lod and Hatzor HaGlilit as hot spots for a measles outbreak.

There are currently seven active patients in Hatzor HaGlilit, and 17 active patients in Lod.

Additional cities defined as outbreak hotspots are Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Bnei Brak, Modi'in Illit, Nof HaGalil, Kiryat Gat, Netivot, Mateh Binyamin Regional Council, Beitar Illit, Tiberias, Safed, Petah Tikva and Harish.

In light of the outbreak, the Ministry of Health recommends vaccinating infants aged 6 to 11 months with the MMR vaccine - measles, mumps, and rubella - only, and emphasizes that the dose is intended to serve as protection during the outbreak, but is not considered part of the vaccination routine...

...The Ministry of Health does not have complete data on the number of confirmed cases. The Ministry of Health is aware, however, of 2,747 confirmed cases, but the true number is estimated at 9,000 to 13,000.

A total of 914 people were hospitalized and 23 patients are currently hospitalized - six of them in intensive care.

Almost all of the confirmed patients are minors: 1,623 of them - about 60 percent of all patients - are toddlers from one to four years old.

So far, 13 children have died from measles in the current outbreak that began in late April, most of them children from Jerusalem. All but one are unvaccinated infants and toddlers with no previous underlying illnesses.

A 1-year-old child died of measles Wednesday morning, health officials in Jerusalem said, marking the 14th fatality in a months-long outbreak that has swept through ultra-Orthodox communities and areas with low immunization rates.

The country is in the midst of its worst measles epidemic since 2018-2019, though the current outbreak has seen significantly more deaths, indicating that the disease is reaching more vulnerable populations and that sick babies may not be getting medical care in time.

The measles death is the second in under a month; a 11-month-old baby died at a Jerusalem hospital on January 8.

Most of the victims have been healthy children with no underlying conditions who were not vaccinated against measles.

According to Health Ministry data, 14 people are currently hospitalized with measles, including four in intensive care...

Following the death of a 17-year-old unvaccinated boy in Israel’s ongoing measles outbreak, the Health Ministry stressed the importance of vaccinations and seeking treatment in a statement on Tuesday.

The teenage boy, who had underlying health conditions, was hospitalized and diagnosed with measles two and a half weeks ago, dying in the night between Sunday and Monday, the Health Ministry said.

In total, 17 deaths from measles have been recorded since April 2025, with most of the fatalities occurring in unvaccinated but otherwise healthy children and infants.

The outbreak, largely concentrated within the country’s ultra-Orthodox communities, is almost completely preventable through vaccination, something that the Health Ministry emphasized in the statement...
