Flusurvey.ie launched

Flusurvey.ie is a new website that will map the spread of seasonal influenza and allow health authorities and members of the public fight against flu. The site is the result of a joint research collaboration between NUI Galway, the HSE, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre and international partners from the EU-wide Influenzanet project and enlists members of the public to help in the fight against seasonal flu.

Flusurvey.ie is part of Influenzanet, already used in other European countries, which is an innovative development using on-line volunteers to support existing influenza monitoring systems and is accessible at http://flusurvey.ie. It will be available to the general public from Monday November 4th, 2013.

The internet has been used to monitor patterns of influenza-like-illness (ILI) in the Netherlands and Belgium since 2003, in Portugal since 2005, in Italy since 2008 and in the UK since 2009. Denmark, France, Spain, and Sweden are also running their versions of 'flusurvey'.


The system will indicate to those that register, how many other cases are recorded in their area of residence and will provide real time data about the spread of flu. It will provide valuable public health information on the demographics and geographic location of influenza sufferers. Using internet technology it provides public health agencies across Europe with novel opportunities for gathering data from members of the public on infectious diseases such as influenza.

Volunteers register online and self-report by answering short questions relating to demographic, medical, socio-economic and lifestyle issues. The information received is anonymous.

Participants can view interactive maps with influenza data broken down at their local and national levels, and the system can map the spread of the disease in its early stages, and provide health professionals with an early warning signal of nationwide outbreaks.

 Sporadic detections of adenovirus and parainfluenza viruses have been reported from the NVRL for the
2013/2014 season to date. Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) positive detections from non-sentinel
sources increased during week 2 2014 to 4.9%.
 The number of reported confirmed influenza hospitalised cases increased to 11 during week 2 2014,
bringing the total number of hospitalised cases reported this season to 15.
 Three confirmed influenza cases were admitted to ICU and reported to HPSC to date this season, two
associated with influenza A(H1)pdm09and one with A(H3).
 There were no reports of any confirmed influenza-associated deaths occurring during this period.
 Three acute respiratory outbreaks in residential care facilities/community hospitals were reported during
week 2 2014 to HPSC (via Ireland?s Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting System).
 The 2013/2014 influenza season appears to be slowly getting started in European countries. In North
America influenza activity has sharply increased over recent weeks, with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09
predominating.

Summary
 Several indicators of influenza activity increased in Ireland during week 3 2014; however activity still
remained at low levels. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity peaked during week 1 2014; and has
decreased each week for the last two consecutive weeks.
 The sentinel GP influenza-like illness (ILI) consultation rate was 13.7 per 100,000 population during week 3
2014, a slight increase compared to the updated rate of 12.3 per 100,000 during week 2 2014.
 ILI rates remained below the Irish baseline threshold (21.0 per 100,000 population)
 ILI rates remained at low levels in all age groups, although were increasing in those aged 65 years
and older.
 Influenza positivity increased during week 3 2014, with 33 (15.9%) influenza positive specimens reported
from the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL): 18 influenza A(H1)pdm09, 13 influenza A(H3), 1
influenza A (not subtyped) and 1 influenza B.
 Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) positivity decreased during week 3 2014, with 25 (13.1%) RSV positive
specimens reported from the NVRL.
 Sporadic detections of adenovirus, human metapneumovirus and parainfluenza viruses have been
reported from the NVRL for the 2013/2014 season to date.
 Eleven confirmed influenza A hospitalised cases were reported to HPSC during week 3 2014, bringing the
total number of hospitalised cases reported this season to 28.
 Five confirmed influenza cases were admitted to ICU and reported to HPSC to date this season, three
associated with influenza A(H1)pdm09and two with A(H3).
 There were no reports of any confirmed influenza-associated deaths occurring during this period.

 The 2013/2014 influenza season has now started in European countries with increasing ILI rates and

associated with influenza A(H1)pdm09 , six with A(H3) and three A (not subtyped).  Two influenza-associated deaths were reported to HPSC this season, both patients were over 65 years of

 The sentinel GP influenza-like illness (ILI) consultation rate was 32.4 per 100,000 population during week 6
2014, an increase compared to the updated rate of 20.5 per 100,000 during week 5 2014.
 ILI rates were above the Irish baseline threshold (21.0 per 100,000 population) during week 6
2014, for the first time this season.
 ILI age specific rates increased in all age groups, with the highest age specific rates in the 15-64
year age group.
 Influenza positivity decreased slightly during week 6 2014, with 68 (20.2%) influenza positive specimens
