Virus tests after six die in home

Six elderly residents of a private nursing home have died after a suspected outbreak of a virus.

All of those who died at Nazareth House at Fahan, near Buncrana, Co Donegal, over the past two weeks were over the age of 80 years, it is understood.

Five died in "a cluster" over the past five days, said the Health Service Executive (HSE).

It is believed there are 39 remaining residents in the care home, overlooking Lough Swilly, which had been run by the Sisters of Nazareth, a religious order of nuns.

Of these, 27 have also shown signs of respiratory illness.

Swabs have been taken from these affected elderly residents which have been sent for analysis in Dublin...

Six people have died in a private nursing home in Co Donegal within the last two weeks, with five deaths in the last five days.

Six patients die in private nursing home in Donegal
The HSE has said the deaths, which occured in Nazareth House, Fahan, Co Donegal, may have been as a result of a respiratory type illness.
?The HSE is fully investigating the matter and all appropriate treatment and control measures have been put in place,? it said.
?All residents in the nursing home are currently receiving either active or preventative treatment.?
Samples have also been sent to the National Viral Reference Laboratory for examination.

Donegal nursing home patients died from influenza

The Health Service Executive has confirmed that six residents who died after becoming ill at a private nursing home in Co Donegal had contracted influenza.

The deaths occurred at the Nazareth House nursing home in Fahan within the past fortnight.

The institution is run by the Sisters of Nazareth religious congregation.

The 39 other residents being cared for at the home have received anti-viral treatments, with 11 of them showing flu-like symptoms...

...Dr O'Flanagan said that flu is dangerous to the elderly who do not respond well to the seasonal flu vaccine.

The National Virus Reference Laboratory confirmed that those who died at the home had been infected with Influenza Type A...

HSE confirms deaths were caused by flu

The HSE has confirmed that the deaths of six residents in the Nazareth House nursing home in Co Donegal were caused by flu.

However, it has indicated that the current flu vaccine being used may not be completely effective against the particular flu strain that hit the Donegal care centre, as this strain has changed.

The health executive has said the National Virus Reference Laboratory has confirmed that samples taken from patients at the nursing home tested positive for influenza A (H3)...

...The HSE said it noted that the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) recently reported that the strain of A (H3) influenza circulating in the Northern Hemisphere has changed slightly and is 'an imperfect fit' with the A (H3) component of the seasonal influenza vaccine...

Influenza claimed the lives of six elderly people who died in a private nursing home in Co Donegal, tests have revealed.

Eleven other residents at Nazareth House at Fahan, near Buncrana are also suffering with respiratory symptoms similar to the residents who died, health chiefs said.

The Health Service Executive said samples taken from residents tested positive for everyday influenza A (H3).

It also confirmed tonight that four of the six residents who died had been vaccinated for flu.

Delay in notifying lethal flu outbreak

GUIDELINES GIVEN to nursing homes for handling flu outbreaks suggest public health officials should have been notified at least a day earlier of a lethal flu outbreak in Donegal.

The interim guidelines on preventing and managing flu outbreaks at residential care facilities in Ireland for 2011-2012, issued by the national Health Protection Surveillance Centre, stipulate public health officials must be notified if three or more cases of influenza-like illness occur in a nursing home within 72 hours.

Six residents of Nazareth House nursing home at Fahan, near Buncrana, died over a 10-day period between March 22nd and April 2nd.

Three of the deaths occurred within 72 hours, between March 29th and 31st. But officials in the Health Service Executive were not notified until the evening of April 1st.

To date eight flu outbreaks have been reported in Ireland, including three in community hospitals/ long-stay units and two in residential units.

Last night, 11 residents at Nazareth House were still suffering with the flu and concerns remained for a small number of these people.

A spokesman for the HSE said there was no change in their health status and no additional residents had exhibited symptoms of the condition.

THREE ADDITIONAL residents in the Co Donegal nursing home at the centre of a flu outbreak are showing symptoms of the illness, the Health Service Executive has said.

This brings to 14 the number of residents, aged in their 80s and 90s, who are suffering from the flu at Nazareth House nursing home, Fahan, Buncrana. Six elderly residents died at the home between March 22nd and April 2nd...

The HSE has said the latest death does not appear to be linked to the current flu outbreak that killed six other elderly people at the same home.

HSE confirms influenza death of another Nazareth resident

A seventh resident of the Nazareth Private Nursing Home in Co Donegal has died after being diagnosed with influenza. The latest victim passed away at Letterkenny General Hospital.


The patient was one of a group of patients who had been previously diagnosed with influenza.
The Health Service Executive said seven other residents were being closely monitored at the nursing home in Buncrana, with five showing definite signs of improvement.
There have been no new cases of influenza since last Wednesday.

Eighth person dies from Nazareth flu outbreak


An eight person has died at a private nursing home in Donegal, as part of a flu outbreak there.

The patient passed away at Letterkenny General Hospital earlier today.

This latest death is thought to have been caused by Influenza A ? the flu strain that killed six other elderly people at the Nazareth Home in Buncranca recently.

The HSE confirmed the death of a seventh resident on Friday, but said they didn?t think that fatality was linked to the other flu-related deaths.

In a statement today, the Health Service Executive said the conditions of seven additional patients are being monitored closely ? five of them are said to be showing signs of improvement.

The flu outbreak at Nazareth House nursing home in Fahan, Buncrana, has been declared over by the Health Service Executive.

Seven elderly residents at the Co Donegal home died as a result of the outbreak.

All of the residents at the home who were suffering from symptoms of influenza have since recovered...

Over half of patients at Drumderrig Nursing Home in Boyle affected by flu


The Health Service Executive has confirmed that over half of the patients at Drumderrig Nursing Home in Boyle have been affected by a recent outbreak of seasonal flu.

However it has also confirmed there have been no new cases of the infection since last Thursday the 26th of April.

The HSE has also confirmed that the influenza - A H3 is the same strain that claimed six lives in less than a fortnight at a Donegal nursing home in March and April.

Shannonside News has learned that 42 of the 76 residents in Drumderrig Private Nursing Home in Boyle have been affected by an outbreak of influenza A H3 commonly known as the seasonal flu.

The role of the HSE during an outbreak is to ensure that patients are managed to reduce infection and prevent spread of disease.

The HSE says the recommended infection control measures have been put in place by the private nursing home, which is providing full assistance to the relevant authorities.

The HSE West Public Health team is also working with the management team to closely monitor the situation in line with best practice.

All ill patients have been treated with the anti-viral Tamiflu and all other patients have been put on preventive medicine

Currently the nursing home has ceased admissions temporarily and visitor restrictions also apply.

The Donegal nursing home where seven residents died due to a flu outbreak in March and April appeared to have ?no established procedure? to enable early detection of flu, a report has found.

A report of inspections conducted by the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa) published today finds that while the residents of Nazareth House home in Buncrana were well cared for, there were a number of deficiencies in areas such as staffing arrangements, reporting procedures and cleanliness.

Two inspections at the home by Hiqa on April 2nd, 3rd and 4th were triggered by a report of a significant number of resident deaths in March and April, the report said.
