Measles: 56 cases confirmed in Ireland so far this year

FIFTY-SIX CASES of measles have been confirmed in Ireland to date this year, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

A further 14 possible measles cases are under investigation, as of this morning.

Suspected cases of measles are tested in a laboratory, before being either officially confirmed as measles or denotified.

Of the 56 confirmed cases to date, 28 are males, 26 are females, and the gender was not recorded in two cases.

The majority of confirmed cases this year have been in people aged 34 or younger. Two cases have been confirmed in children younger than 12 months.

Seven outbreaks were reported in the first five months of the year, all of which occurred in private houses and involved between two and five cases in each outbreak.

No new outbreaks have been recorded in June to date....​

SIXTY-EIGHT CASES of measles have been confirmed in Ireland to date this year, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

A further 17 possible measles cases are under investigation, as of yesterday morning.

Suspected cases of measles are tested in a laboratory, before being either officially confirmed as measles or denotified.

Of the 68 confirmed cases to date, 34 are males, 32 are females, and the gender was not recorded for two cases.

The majority of confirmed cases so far this year (65) have been confirmed in people aged 34 or younger.

Two cases have been confirmed in children younger than 12 months.

Ten outbreaks have also been reported, all of which occurred in either private houses or school/residential institutions.

Between two and 13 cases have been confirmed in each outbreak...​

EIGHTY-ONE MEASLES cases have been confirmed in Ireland to date this year, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

Of the 81 confirmed cases, 38 are males, 40 are females and the gender was not recorded for three cases.

Thirteen outbreaks – where two or more confirmed cases are related – have occurred so far in 2024.

The outbreaks occurred in private households, schools or residential institutions, within a community or in a hospital. There were between two and 12 confirmed cases in each outbreak.

In addition to the confirmed cases above, there are 13 cases of suspected measles currently under investigation...​

People aged 34 or younger make up the majority of confirmed cases this year

The total number of people who have tested positive for measles in Ireland this year has risen to 82.

In addition there are 11 cases currently under investigation for measles.

The latest weekly measles report by the HSE says the number of outbreaks this year remains at 13.

Of the 82 confirmed cases, 38 are males, 41 are females and gender is not recorded for three cases...

Case of measles in passenger who travelled on bus from Dublin Airport confirmed as HSE issues alert

An alert has been issued to passengers who travelled on a bus from Dublin Airport to Tipperary following the discovery that a person on board had measles.

The alert from the HSE is for people who travelled on JJ Kavanagh bus number 717 from Dublin Airport to Clonmel departing at 4pm last Saturday, August 17.

It said that “for any passenger on this bus journey who is a pregnant woman, immunocompromised, or under the age of 12-months-old, please immediately contact your GP or hospital clinician for advice. This is because immediate treatment may be beneficial”...

Measles cases rise to 112, compared with just four last year

The number of measles cases diagnosed in Ireland so far this year has reached 112, which is 28 times higher than last year.

The total this year ­compares with four in 2023 and two in 2022, with no infections reported in 2021.

An increase was expected this year due to an escalation in meas­les abroad, and it was feared there would be a surge in cases.

This did not happen, though the numbers infected with the highly contagious virus have climbed steadily...
