THE Department of Public Health Mid-West has warned the region of avian influenza, more widely known as 'bird flu', after reportedly being identified in Limerick.

The Department is advising members of the public in Limerick to avoid handling or coming into contact with dead wild birds, in order to prevent the spread of bird flu in humans - it is also being advised to keep pets away and to stay clear of any touching surfaces contaminated with bird faeces.

H5N1 confirmed in black-headed gulls near Dromineer

The Department of Agriculture has issued an advisory following the discovery of bird flu in a number of sick and dead birds near Dromineer.

An early warning system is in place with Birdwatch Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the National Association of Regional Game Councils with regard to surveillance for signs of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in wild birds. Members of the public can contribute to HPAI surveillance by notifying the department of the location of sick or dead wild birds using the department’s Avian Check App.

It is understood that as many as 50 dead birds have been found in the Dromineer vicinity since the beginning of this year.

“A notification was received in early March on the department’s Avian Check App in relation to sick and dead black-headed gulls on the shores of Lough Derg, close to Dromineer,” the Department of Agriculture stated. ”The department’s Regional Veterinary Office followed up this notification and Avian Influenza of the H5N1 subtype has been confirmed in these wild birds. In the past 12 months, there have been more than 90 wild birds with H5N1 HPAI detected nationally...

Bird flu detected in four northern Ireland areas as keepers urged to step up safety measures

Northern Ireland’s chief vet has called on all bird and poultry keepers to immediately step up their biosecurity measures after Avian Influenza was detected in four locations across NI.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) received confirmation that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was found in samples of dead black headed gulls, which were reported and subsequently collected for testing at Belfast Harbour, Comber, Coalisland and Magherafelt.

The findings resulted in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) voluntarily closing their Window on Wildlife facilities near Belfast on a precautionary basis.

On August 22, 2023, a peregrin falcon that was found dead was submitted to Dublin Regional Veterinary Laboratory. On August 25, 2023 the Irish Central Veterinary Research Laboratory confirmed the presence of avian influenza subtype H5N1 in samples taken from the birds. Pathogenicity results are pending.
