Measles case confirmed at Limerick hospital

A case of measles has been confirmed in Limerick.

As a precaution, the HSE is writing to all patients identified as being at risk of exposure advising them that they may be at risk of infection. There was a risk of exposure having occurred at the following times and places:

Thursday, 4th January, 20.40 to 23.50 at Shannondoc, Dooradoyle
Sunday, 7th January, 13.30 to 16.00 at Shannondoc, Dooradoyle
Sunday, 7th January, 14.00 to 00.30 at Zone A, ED, UHL
Tuesday, 9th January 11.00 to 13.00 at Zone A, ED, UHL...

HSE confirms further outbreak of measles in Limerick

THE HSE has confirmed a further outbreak of measles in Limerick this Wednesday afternoon.

Last Wednesday, the HSE initially announced the measles outbreak, confirming that four cases were detected in Limerick city.

A further cases of the disease have been detected, bringing the total number to 10 in the city.

A spokesperson for the HSE said that a number of further possible cases are being investigation...

The Irish Times states the HSE has confirmed that Dublin is the latest county to join the ongoing outbreak of measles in Ireland.

There has been 11 cases diagnosed so far, 10 in Limerick and one linked case in the capital.

It is said that there are further possible cases being investigated at the moment also in Munster and Dublin that could be measles...

Limerick measles outbreak imported from Middle East

A measles outbreak in Limerick ? where the number of confirmed cases has risen to 13 ? was imported from the Middle East where a patient had travelled over the Christmas period.

One child who contracted the disease was exposed to it in a Limerick hospital in January and was admitted to Temple St Children?s Hospital this month.

The Health Protection Surveilance Centre (HPSC) was made aware of this additional linked case last week.

The information is contained in an email from the HPSC to doctors on February 9 asking them to be on the alert ?to the possibility of spread to other regions and the risk of transmission within health care settings?...

Another three cases of measles have been identified in Limerick, bringing the number of cases to 15 up from 12 last week.

The number of cases has been rising since the beginning of January.

It is mainly confined to two locations - the Ballinacurra Weston area and the Carew Park area of Southill...

This warning comes amid ongoing large outbreaks of the highly contagious infection in Europe.

Over 20 cases have been confirmed in Ireland since the start of the year.

There have been 19 confirmed cases in Limerick and one case accounted for in Dublin...

HSE urge vaccinations as number of cases in Limerick measles outbreak rises

THE HSE is urging adults under 40 across the Mid-West to get the MMR vaccine as the number of reported cases in the Limerick measles outbreak has risen once again.

There are now 22 cases of measles in the Mid-West region since the beginning of the year - all but one which are in Limerick city and one in Clare, the HSE Mid-West has confirmed this Wednesday evening.

The HSE said that the outbreak of measles in the Mid-West "demonstrates that measles is not just a childhood illness".

An Outbreak Control Team made up of representatives from the HSE is involved in managing the outbreak in an effort to prevent further spread.

A spokesperson said: "We are asking all adults aged under 40 to check if they have had two doses of MMR and if not to arrange to get immunised by their GP...

HALF of the measles cases in Limerick have had to be hospitalised, the HSE has said, as the virus outbreak continues to worsen in the region.

The number of measles patients has risen by two, amounting to 25 cases since the outbreak was first announced on January 31...

...Of the 25 cases, majority of which are in Limerick city, with one case in Clare, though this is linked to Limerick.

Almost two-thirds of detections are in people aged 15 to 40. The HSE said that this is ?demonstrating that measles is not just an illness of childhood. Half of the cases have been hospitalised?.

?The only effective protection against measles is two doses of the MMR vaccine...

ONE of Limerick?s most challenging measles outbreaks in recent years continues to worsen, 13 weeks after the first case was detected in the city.

The outbreak, which was first announced by the HSE on January 16, has risen to 26 cases, a small increase of one person since last week.

And since the outbreak, it has emerged that more than 2,500 families with children that were not registered as having received the MMR vaccine.

As a result, letters have been sent to those families in the Mid-West to increase attendance at the free MMR clinics, now running every Thursday at Barrack View primary care centre...

THE HSE has confirmed that there are now 28 cases of measles in the Mid-West region, the majority of which are in Limerick city.

This week marks the fourth month since the measles outbreak was first announced by the HSE.

Three cases are linked to Clare, Dublin and Galway.

?There are also a number of cases in the South East area, who are possibly linked to the Limerick outbreak,? the HSE said.

The HSE is continuing to urge adults aged under 40 across the Mid-West to get the MMR vaccine which is available free from GPs and is warning that ?measles is a serious public health issue?...

Anyone showing symptoms of measles is being warned to stay at home and phone their GP.

It comes after an adult and child attended four hospitals in the capital while at their most contagious.

The two patients, believed to be foreign nationals living in Dublin, attended Tallaght Hospital on July 1, then again on July 5. They then presented at the Mater Hospital on July 7, Temple Street Children's Hospital on July 13 and again on July 15 and 16.

Finally they visited Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, on July 16...

A PUBLIC health warning has been issued after four new cases of measles were reported in Dublin.

It comes after the HSE issued a previous alert last month in relation to two other cases of measles.

The sufferers - two adults and two children - are likely to have contracted the illness from contact with one of the two earlier cases in hospital, the HSE said...

The HSE has said it is concerned about the risk of measles in children who attended Temple Street children?s hospital in Dublin at the end of July.

The executive has been notified about a further five cases of the disease in recent days, bringing the current outbreak to 11 so far.

Measles cases are also occurring in the community in Dublin, it said.

The HSE added that it was particularly concerned about the risk of measles in children who attended the outpatients department of Temple Street hospital on Wednesday July 25th between 9:30am and 2:00pm, those who attended the emergency department the following day, Thursday July 26th between 7.15pm and midnight, those who attended the emergency department on Friday July 27th between 4:20pm and 7:30pm or the emergency department on Monday August 6th between 2:20pm and 10:00pm. This is because they may have been exposed to an infectious case of measles during those times.

People who suspect they may have contracted the disease are advised to stay home, contact their GP and not allow visitors. Pregnant women who have been exposed to measles should seek medical advice as soon as possible...
