Kerry schools are braced for mumps epidemic

kerry's secondary schools are braced for an epidemic of mumps after the HSE confirmed that the number of outbreaks have been rising at an alarming rate in recent weeks.

The health executive has provided figures to The Kerryman for counties Kerry and Cork combined, revealing 104 confirmed in the first eight weeks of the year. This is already 40 percent of the total cases for Kerry and Cork in 2014 which reached 265.

More worryingly, though, Kerry and Cork have accounted for over 27 percent of national mumps cases since the start of the year...

...The number of mumps cases nationwide began to escalate in the autumn of 2014, with 762 mumps notifications reported that year compared to just 223 mumps notifications in 2013. The increase in cases has continued in 2015, with 380 case to date from the start of the year until February 24...

There has been a major outbreak of mumps in Ireland over the past 12 months with almost 2,000 cases of the highly infectious disease having been notified to the health authorities.
