10% of measles cases contracted abroad

Almost 10% of all cases of measles in Ireland have been contracted by people visiting continental Europe after a major outbreak of the disease...

...In Ireland, 110 cases of measles were reported since the start of the year.

Half of all those who contracted the disease were not fully vaccinated.

Almost 80% were detected in the HSE East region...

HSE urges vaccinations for children, especially before travelling to Europe

...More than 21,000 cases have been reported in Europe since the beginning of the year, with more than half reported in France. Six children died in France, 14 suffered neurological complications and 444 contracted severe pneumonia.

Some 110 measles cases have been detected in Ireland so far this year, at least eight of which were due to infection while travelling in Europe.

In 87 of the cases, the children were living in the HSE East region, in or near Dublin, and in almost half of cases the children were eligible for vaccination but had not received any doses.

In 14 cases, the children were under 12 months of age and too young to have been vaccinated...

Almost one in 10 children who contracted measles over the summer had to be hospitalised according to reports.

Some 139 cases of measles were recorded in August and September alone, with 11 of these admitted to hospital...

Number of measles cases 'worrying'

The State body which compiles statistics on notifiable diseases has described as ?worrying? the number of measles outbreaks in Ireland and Europe during 2010, after figures showed a 149 per cent increase in cases.

The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre published its annual report on the incidence of notifiable diseases for last year.

Measles cases increased by 60 per cent in 2010, with 403 cases notified compared with 162 cases in 2009. The centre said 108 of these cases were hospitalised in 2010. A total of 40 separate measles outbreaks were reported during the year.

The predominantly occurred in children who are not vaccinated against vaccine-preventable disease. Other European countries also saw measles outbreaks during 2010.

There have been over 250 cases of measles so far this year, with about 220 of those occurring in the Dublin region.

The number of cases of mumps fell by 53 per cent, with 293 cases reported compared with 620 in 2009...
