Three more swine flu cases in Iraq

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq (AFP) ? Iraq's northern autonomous region diagnosed three more cases of swine flu on Friday, including the 12-year-old brother of a female basketball player struck down by the condition.

One of the new victims was on the same plane as five members of a women's basketball team and their male coach, returning from the United States, who were diagnosed a day earlier, said regional health minister Ziryan Osman.
"We recorded three more cases," Osman told AFP.

"Two of the people are from Sulaimaniyah, one of whom lives there, and the other is an Egyptian who works there. One case is a 12-year old child, who is the brother of one of the female basketball players."

The six previously confirmed swine flu sufferers returned to Iraqi Kurdistan from Chicago a week ago and were kept in hospital for tests until their condition was confirmed on Thursday.

On their way back from the US city, the team passed through the Jordanian capital Amman, where another female player was held because tests found she had the A(H1N1) virus.

"The Egyptian man was on the plane that transported the basketball players from Amman to Sulaimaniyah," Osman said.

The third newly-diagnosed case involved a Malaysian man who had flown from Dubai to the Kurdish capital Arbil, the health minister added.

2009-08-02 18:39:24

BAGHDAD, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of A/H1N1 flu cases in Iraq increased to 58, including 38 cases detected among the Multi-National Forces in Iraq, an official Iraqi newspaper reported on Sunday.

"The total number of swine flu cases registered in the country climbed to 58 after detecting ten new cases for Iraqi students who returned from the United States where they studied," the state-run newspaper of al-Sabah quoted Ihsan Jaafar, spokesman of the Iraqi Health Ministry, as saying.

Jaafar confirmed that most of the epidemic cases in the country were among the American soldiers, and that only 20 cases were among Iraqis including nine in the autonomous region of Kurdistan, eight in Baghdad and one each in the provinces of Babel and Kirkuk.

The new patients are at hospital, receiving medication and their conditions are stable, he said.

Iraq announced its first six cases of A/H1N1 flu in the country's northern Kurdish region on June 24.

A/H1N1 influenza is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease with symptoms generally including upper respiratory problems, but the air-borne illness can cause severe pneumonia and even death.

Prohibited from Iraq over 65 pilgrimage to Mecca by influenza A

Prohibited from Iraq over 65 make the hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca (Saudi Arabia), to prevent the spread of influenza A, reported Friday Iraqi government spokesman Ali Dabaga, in a statement.

According to the note, the Iraqi cabinet decided to adopt this measure in implementing the resolutions taken at an emergency meeting of the Regional Office of World Health Organization (WHO) in the eastern Mediterranean, held last July in The Cairo.

Dabaga explained that the seats that remain vacant this year by the prohibition, shall be apportioned among those persons who have applied to travel to Mecca in 2010.

Each year, Saudi Arabia assigns a quota of pilgrims every Arab and Muslim country in terms of its population, which in turn circumvent these positions among all those who ask.

Baghdad's decision adds to that of other Arab states like Egypt, which have resolved to prevent children under twelve years old, the sick, pregnant women and the elderly carry out the hajj this year.

Even the Egyptian mufti, Ali Gomaa, the highest Islamic religious authority in the country, said "legitimate" canceling this year's pilgrimage, if AH1N1 flu continues to spread.

The pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the five pillars of Islam and is a duty at least once in the life of Muslims, who can afford it financially, has to fulfill.

In Iraq, about 185 were found infected with influenza A virus and one death from the disease.

The number of cases of influenza A in the world exceeds 296,471, and deaths from the H1N1 virus, the cause of the disease are at least 3486, according to the World Health Organization, WHO. :tiphat:http://www.lapatria.com/Noticias/ver_noticia.aspx?CODNOT=76186&CODSEC=9
