​ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraq’s health ministry on Sunday confirmed that two people have died and 17 others have contracted the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) across the country, adding that the government has begun implementing preventative measures to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

Iraqi Health Minister Saleh Mahdi al-Hasnawi stated that “so far, 19 cases of hemorrhagic fever have been recorded - seven in Dhi Qar and four in Kirkuk, two of which were fatal,” while the remaining cases are spread across various provinces.

However, officials confirmed that containment efforts have been successful in the southern province of Dhi Qar, the area worst hit by the outbreak.

Dr. Thaer Sabri Hussein, Director of the Epidemiology Department at the Ministry’s Veterinary Directorate, provided detailed figures, stating: “The total number of confirmed cases reached 179, including 23 fatalities.” He noted that Dhi Qar recorded 50 cases and one death, followed by Baghdad with 28 cases and eight deaths.

The death toll from Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Iraq has risen to 30, with a total of 231 cases recorded across the country since the beginning of the year, the Iraqi Health Ministry announced on Monday.

Ministry spokesman Saif al-Badr said in a statement that the southern province of Dhi Qar recorded the highest number of infections, with 84 cases and four deaths, followed by Baghdad with 38 cases and six deaths.

These latest figures mark an increase from those announced by Iraqi health authorities on June 12, which stood at 123 cases and 19 deaths.

Mr. Al-Badr recommended that citizens purchase meat from slaughterhouses approved by health authorities, keep it at very low temperatures, and ensure it is cooked at high temperatures to eliminate pathogens.

CCHF, which is characterized by fever, muscle pain, headache, and bleeding, has a high mortality rate of between 10 and 40%.

Since the late 1970s, CCHF has been the most common viral hemorrhagic fever in Iraq. It is transmitted to humans primarily through tick bites or contact with the blood and tissues of infected animals, particularly cattle.
