Dhi Qar leads Iraq in Congo fever cases this year

​ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Dhi Qar province in southern Iraq is leading the country in cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever this year, with 18 occurrences reported and three deaths, according to local veterinary officials.

“Since the start of the year in Iraq, more than 40 instances of [Crimean-Congo] hemorrhagic fever have been recorded, and six of them have passed away,” Mohammed Aziz al-Mayahi, head of Dhi Qar’s veterinary directorate, told Rudaw on Monday.

According to Mayahi, Dhi Qar has recorded 18 cases and 3 deaths in 2024, with half of the cases occurring in the Shatra district.

Nineveh and Baghdad have each confirmed six cases. One death has been recorded in each province. Babil province has four cases and one death. There was no recent data immediately available for the Kurdistan Region...

Nine Congo fever cases recorded in Kurdistan Region this year

​ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least nine cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever have been reported across the Kurdistan Region in 2023, with one patient from Duhok losing his life.

Three cases have been recorded in Erbil, according to the latest numbers, including a 40-year-old Baghdad resident who contracted the fever in the Kurdistan Region capital.

In Sulaimani, three people have contracted the disease, Saman Sheikh Latif, spokesperson for Sulaimani’s health directorate, told Rudaw on Saturday. All three were sent home after receiving medical care.

No deaths from the disease have been reported in Erbil or Sulaimani. In May, one Congo fever patient from Duhok died in an Erbil hospital...

Two Hemorrhagic Fever cases reported in Nineveh

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Nineveh Health authorities confirmed two cases of hemorrhagic fever, one of which has resulted in a fatality.

A source from Nineveh Health told Shafaq News Agency that a 50-year-old woman from Al-Areej village in the Hamam al-Alil district, south of Mosul, died from hemorrhagic fever at Al-Shifa Hospital in Mosul. The woman had been experiencing symptoms since July 20 but delayed seeking medical care, resulting in a severe progression of her condition.

Additionally, a 20-year-old man from the Al- neighborhood in Mosul, who works as a butcher, has been diagnosed with the disease.

As of now, Nineveh has recorded 16 confirmed cases this year. Among these, there have been three fatalities, according to the health department source.​..

Iraq records 178 Congo fever cases since January

​RBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq’s health ministry on Monday announced that 178 cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever have been recorded in the country since the beginning of 2024 with 26 deaths, with the southern province of Dhi Qar leading the charts in infections.

“The total number of confirmed cases of hemorrhagic fever since the beginning of the year until now has reached 178, including 26 deaths,” Saif al-Badr, spokesperson for Iraq’s health ministry, told state media.

Dhi Qar province, known for rearing cattle, sheep, and goats, all of which are potential carriers of the disease, leads the country in hemorrhagic fever cases.

211 Congo fever cases recorded in Iraq this year

​ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq’s health ministry on Sunday announced it has recorded 211 cases of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever since the beginning of the year, with the disease having so far killed 26.

“The number of cases from hemorrhagic fever during the current year reached 211 cases, including 26 deaths and 185 other infections,” Saif al-Badr, spokesperson for Iraq’s health ministry, said during a presser in Baghdad.

The southern province of Dhi Qar, known for rearing cattle, sheep, and goats, all of which are potential carriers of the disease, has the lion’s share of cases with 40, followed by Nineveh, Baghdad, and Basra.

In the Kurdistan Region, Erbil province leads the charts with seven cases, followed by Duhok with five and Sulaimani with three.​..
