Iraq confirms 13 cholera cases, scores suspected

A cholera outbreak in Iraq has infected at least 13 people and scores more suspected cases have been sent for analysis, most from the northern Kurdistan region, health officials said Sunday.

"Ten cases of cholera have been recorded in the province" of Sulaimaniyah, said Sabah Hawrami, district health chief in the autonomous Kurdistan region.

Another 56 suspected cases from the same province are being analysed by a central laboratory in the capital Baghdad, the only one able to provide the diagnosis.

The health ministry said one case had been registered in Kirkuk province, neighbouring Sulaimaniyah, while two were recorded in the southern province of Muthanna.

No deaths have yet been registered...

Nearly five thousand cholera cases have been recorded in Sulaimaniyah province of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, and at least four people have died due to the pandemic.

Cholera has spread across Iraq, severely hitting Sulaymaniyah province in the northern Kurdistan region, where nearly five thousand cholera cases have been recorded and at least four people died of the pandemic, Kurdish officials told The New Arab.

Dr Hersh Salim, deputy head of Sulaimaniyah health directorate told TNA during a brief phone call on Tuesday that infection cases in the province have reached "nearly five thousand cases, and so far four to five people died due to the outbreak."

"All over the world, cholera spreads through polluted water and unhealthy food. We have both factors, especially unhealthy mobile food providers or food delivery services that use vegetables. That's why a large number of people are affected by the disease. Currently, we have enough medical supplies to contain the outbreak," Dr Salim added...

Iraq’s Ministry of Health has reported the first death from a cholera outbreak after it announced at least 17 more cases in 24 hours, taking the total to 76 this year.

“The governorate of Kirkuk recorded its first death from the disease today,” Ministry of Health spokesman Saif Al Badr said, according to state news agency INA.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A person died in Iraq’s capital Baghdad from cholera, the Iraqi Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

Iraq has recorded 139 cases of cholera this year, Iraqi Ministry of Health spokesperson Saif Al-Badr told state media on Thursday.

Thursday’s death in Baghdad is the second cholera death in Iraq this year. The victim was female, according to Al-Badr.

In June, an 87-year-old woman with underlying health conditions also died of cholera in Kirkuk province.

CAIRO (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 11th October, 2022) About 700 children with diarrhea and nausea were taken to hospitals in Sulaymaniyah province in northern Iraq over the past 24 hours, the Shafaq news agency reported on Tuesday.

According to the media outlet,137 children are currently in intensive care.

The Iraqi Health Ministry did not specify whether it could be a cholera outbreak.

The first case of cholera infection was registered in the province of Kirkuk in northern Iraq in June. After that, Iraqi doctors also reported cases of infections in the northern, central and southern regions of the country, including the provinces of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Diyala, Al Muthanna, Dhi Qar and Babylon, as well as the capital city of Baghdad...

A. SITUATION ANALYSIS

Description of the disaster

On 19 June 2022, Iraq’s health authorities announced a cholera outbreak after at least 13 cases were confirmed across the country and thousands of hospital admissions for acute diarrhea were reported. The number of diarrhea cases kept increasing well beyond the normal ranges witnessed in previous years. As of 02 November 2022, there was a total of 3,063 confirmed cholera cases and 19 deaths across the country.
Cholera remains a threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of awareness in communities....
