Update: UAE reports interception of 3 drones after nuclear plant targeted

Xinhua
May 17, 2026

ABU DHABI, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defense said Sunday its air defense systems intercepted three drones that entered UAE airspace from the western border area.

The ministry said two of the drones were successfully intercepted, while the third struck an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Al Dhafra region.

An investigation is underway to determine the source of the attack, the ministry said.

Earlier in the day, Abu Dhabi authorities reported that a drone strike had caused a fire in an electrical generator near the Barakah nuclear power plant. Authorities said the fire was brought under control, with no injuries or impact on radiological safety levels reported.

Barakah is central to the UAE's clean energy goals. The plant began full commercial operations in September 2024 and generates approximately 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, supplying about 25 percent of the country's electricity needs, according to local media reports. Enditem

US Iran news LIVE: Pakistan deploys troops, fighter jets to Saudi Arabia amid Iran conflict

US Iran news LIVE: Pakistan has deployed around 8,000 troops, a squadron of fighter jets and an air defence system to Saudi Arabia under a mutual defence agreement, significantly deepening military cooperation with Riyadh even as Islamabad continues to act as a key mediator in the Iran conflict.

The deployment - the full scale of which has been reported for the first time - was confirmed by three security officials and two government sources, who described it as a substantial combat-ready force intended to assist Saudi Arabia if the kingdom faces further attacks.

Pakistan’s military and foreign office, along with Saudi Arabia’s government media office, did not respond to requests for comment on the reported deployment.

First Attack On Arab Nuclear Site Sends Warning To Gulf, US
May 18, 2026

Excerpt:

The first attack targeting an Arab nuclear site has sent a symbolic warning to the United Arab Emirates and its allies, even as Iran and the US remain in negotiations to end the Middle East war, analysts say.

...The limited attack appeared to leave room for de-escalation, while sending a message to Gulf nations that the region remains vulnerable despite the ongoing US-Iran ceasefire and peace talks, in which Iran is using economic bargaining tools.

"This is highly significant symbolically, even if the physical damage appears limited," according to Andreas Krieg, a security expert at King's College London, who described it as "both a major escalation and a warning shot".

The Arab world's only nuclear plant, located near the UAE's western border with Saudi Arabia, is the country's largest source of electricity and produces around a quarter of national power.

"It was clearly designed to show that even the UAE's most sensitive and internationally protected infrastructure can be reached. That is the message," said Krieg

"The attacker was signalling vulnerability without necessarily crossing the threshold into mass casualty or nuclear safety crisis."

... "Nuclear infrastructure has generally been treated as a red line in the region. The message is: no strategic infrastructure in the Gulf is completely immune."

...
If the attack was confirmed to be from Iran or its allied groups like the Houthis in Yemen or Shia groups in Iraq, Bitar said Tehran was likely signalling its "discontent with the UAE's cooperation with Israel and the US".

...It suggests that "if the US were to escalate and attack civilian infrastructure or important critical infrastructure in Iran, Iran would do the same to the UAE and across the Gulf," said Dania Thafer, director of the Gulf International Forum research institute

IRGC warns war will expand beyond region if Iran hit again
May 20, 2026

TEHRAN, May 20 (MNA) – Iran's IRGC warned Wednesday that any renewed US-Israeli aggression on the country will trigger a war extending far beyond the Middle East, with strikes in places adversaries do not expect.

In a strongly worded statement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps addressed the "American-Zionist enemy," saying Washington and Israel have failed to learn from repeated strategic defeats and are once again resorting to threats.

The IRGC said that while the two armies attacked Iran with the full capabilities of the world's most expensive military forces, Iran did not deploy all of its capacities against them.

Should aggression be repeated, the IRGC emphasized, "the regional war that was promised will this time be extended beyond the region, and our crushing blows will bring you to ruin in places you cannot imagine."

Quoting a Quranic verse on fighting those who break their oaths and mock the faith, the IRGC declared, "We are men of war, and you will see our power on the battlefield, not in hollow statements and virtual pages."

Pakistani Interior Minister Departs for Tehran
20 May 20261:03 PM

Pakistani Interior Minister Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi has departed for Tehran to hold high-level talks with officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, according to informed sources speaking to Iranian media.

This marks Senator Naqvi’s second trip to Iran in less than a week. The minister previously traveled to Tehran on May 16, where on May 17, he held a 90-minute private meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

During that visit, he also met with Seyed Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament.

During the earlier meeting at the parliament building, Speaker Ghalibaf addressed regional dynamics and criticized the presence of foreign forces in the Middle East.

“Some governments in the region imagined that the U.S. presence would bring them security,” Ghalibaf told the Pakistani minister during their talks. “But recent events showed that this presence is not only not security-generating, but it also paves the way for insecurity.”

Iran civilians learn assault rifle basics to fend off US
Tue, May 19, 2026 at 6:21 AM EDT

Gathered around a Revolutionary Guard in central Tehran, an audience of Iranians is learning to use an AK-47 assault rifle, in case it falls to them to defend the country from renewed US attacks.
-snip-

The authorities have set up military training booths across Tehran in recent days to teach the public the basics of weapons handling, as they seek to prepare Iranian society for the possibility of a return to fighting.
-snip-

So far, the training only extends to using assault rifles, but Sadeghi said "God willing, in the coming days, depending on what higher authorities deem appropriate, other weapons will also be brought in for training".

Their audiences include men with little previous military training as well as chador-clad women, some with head and wrist bands of the Iranian flag.

Back at Haft-e Tir Square, Mahnaz, a 39-year-old mother of three, said learning to use guns had become necessary under the current circumstances.

UAE Strongly Condemns Terrorist Drone Attacks Targeting Barakah Plant Launched from Iraqi Territory

Wed 20/5/2026

The United Arab Emirates has condemned in the strongest terms the unprovoked terrorist drone attacks launched from Iraqi territory, including an attack targeting the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday, which struck an electricity generator located outside the inner perimeter of the plant.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) affirmed the UAE’s strong condemnation and categorical rejection of the heinous terrorist attacks launched from Iraqi territory against critical civilian institutions across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, in flagrant violation of their sovereignty, airspace, and in clear breach of the principles of international law, international humanitarian law, and the Charter of the United Nations.

The Ministry underscored the importance of the Iraqi government’s commitment to immediately and unconditionally halt and prevent all acts of aggression launched from its territory, emphasizing the need to address these threats in an immediate and responsible manner, in accordance with relevant international and regional laws and charters.

Furthermore, the Ministry stressed the importance of Iraq fulfilling its role in strengthening security and stability in the region, thereby preserving its sovereignty and enhancing its position as an active and responsible partner within the region.
