Iran's swine flu cases increase to 9: minister

TEHRAN - Health Minister Kamran Baqeri-Lankarani stated here on Tuesday that 9 cases of swine flu have been detected in Iran.

"In addition to the first infected Iranian and the two others who had been announced previously? the disease has been confirmed in 6 others and the number infected (people) has increased to 9," Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) quoted the minister as saying.

Lankarani added none of the detected cases have been infected in Iran.

The first case was a teenager who lives in the United States and the two others have been Haj pilgrims, he said.

He also stated that all the patients have received full treatments and their health conditions are satisfactory.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the health minister said it has not been decided whether Iranian pilgrims will be allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia for this year's hajj due to the risk of the spread of swine flu.

He added he will have meetings with the health ministers of the east Mediterranean countries member to the World Health Organization to decide about this year's hajj.

The Iranian Minister of Health and Medical Education, Kamran Bagheri Lankarani, has said the number of swine flu cases in Iran has increased to 61.

"According to the latest tally, 61 Iranian people have been infected with the H1N1 flu virus," IRNA quoted Lankarani as saying on Thursday.

"The Health and Medical Education Ministry recommends the cancelation or serious limitation on the Umrah pilgrimage for Iranians during the holy month of Ramadan to reduce their risk of catching swine flu," he added.

Earlier, the health minister urged citizens to hold off on their traditionally warm greetings, foregoing hugs and kisses to tourists returning from other countries to contain the spread of infection.

According to Iranian health officials, the confirmed cases include individuals returning from the hajj pilgrimage and trips to Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Syria, Iraq and the US.

Earlier, Lankarani announced that Iran had implemented a national plan to develop a vaccine for the swine flu.

Iran's first swine flu case was a 16-year-old Iranian-American boy, who tested positive for the disease on June 22, upon arrival in the Iranian capital Tehran.

'Iran has enough anti-swine flu drugs'

After having identified 85 individuals with swine flu, Iranian health officials say the country has sufficient stocks of antivirals to fight the disease.

Iranian scientists have identified the formulation of the antiviral effective in treating H1N1, the country, therefore, should pay 60% less for the drug, said Kamran Baqeri-Lankarani, Iran's Minister of Health and Medical Education.

"Iran has collected a sufficient stock of the antiviral," added Lankarani, stressing that they can provide infected individuals with the required doses of the drug in the shortest time possible.

He added that Iranian researchers have also succeeded in increasing the two-year shelf life of the drug to five years and can store the medication for longer periods.

He added that considering the reports regarding cases resistant to commonly used antivirals in Eastern Asia and Canada, Iran is ready to produce the substitute drug amantadine.

Lankarani announced that Iran is to implement a national plan to reduce the spread of the disease, adding that developing a vaccine for the condition is also not far away.

Earlier officials had predicted that some 10 million individuals would contract the disease in the country in the next 2 to 3 years, adding that one in every 200 individuals will die of the condition in the most optimistic scenario

Swine Flu Cases Hit 238 in Iran

TEHRAN, Aug. 19 (Mehr News Agency) ? A total of 238 people in Iran have been so far diagnosed with swine flu, the Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The increasing number of people found infected with H1N1 has jumped from 196, reported last week, to 238.

According to the ministry, hajj pilgrims account for 52% of the patients, and travelers to other countries, especially South-East Asian states, make up 30% of the total number.

The health minister has heretofore urged citizens to refrain from unnecessary travels to other countries in a bid to prevent the spread of disease.

Iranian health officials have reported that the number of positive cases of swine fluhas reached 357 in the country.

The head of the Iranian Health Ministry's Center for Disease Control, Mohammad-Mehdi Gouya, told ISNA that a total of 357 confirmed A/H1N1 cases had been identified in the country, adding that the disease had only claimed two lives in the country.

Gouya said some 29 new cases had been identified last week, suggesting a decline in the trend of the disease in the country.

He added that restricting the Hajj pilgrimage in the past month had played a critical role in containing the virus.

"Officials are planning to start certain educational programs in the main streets of the city, cinemas, cultural and medical centers regarding the ways to stop the spread of the new influenza virus," said the head of the Iranian Health Ministry's Center for Disease Control.

He reported that certain educational posters would soon be hung in metro and bus stations, adding that officials hope to implement certain plans to contain the spread of the disease in crowded places such as the metro.

Gouya said the number of infected cases had doubled in the Eastern Mediterranean region, adding that Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait are the worst hit countries in the region.

Swine flu has claimed 2,800 lives worldwide.

Iran swine flu cases pass 400

Iranian health officials have detected nine new confirmed cases of swine flu in the past week, bringing the country's total toll to 400.

Head of the Iranian Health Ministry's Center for Disease Control Mohammad-Mehdi Gouya told ISNA that the number of individuals who have contracted the A/H1N1 flu virus in Iran is considerably less than that reported in neighboring countries.

Gouya said that nine new patients had tested positive for the new flu virus in the past week, adding that the virus has claimed no new lives.

He stressed that all treated cases had been discharged from hospital in good health.

Gouya added that the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education is aiming to establish new measures to contain the epidemic in the flu season, which coincides with the start of school.

He reported that special teams had been trained to tackle the spread of the virus in schools.

The head of the Iranian Health Ministry's Center for Disease Control urged parents particularly those who have preschoolers to teach their kids to follow precautionary measures such as frequently washing their hands.

Gouya also advised parents to visit a physician as soon as their child presents flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough and sore throat, adding that these children should rest at home and avoid public areas until they are healthy again.
