Swine flu has struck down more than 1000 residents in the region, including children, with the contagious strain of influenza the most common this year.

Several Ipswich child care centres and schools have sent children home to protect others from the virus but only a small number of people have required hospitalisation.

There have been 1051 reported cases of swine flu in the Darling Downs West Moreton district so far this year.

Dr Heidi Carroll from the West Moreton Public Health Unit said testing was done on the most vulnerable, such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic diseases.

``With the flu season coming to an end it is expected that the number of influenza notifications will start to decrease in coming weeks, however people are reminded to be vigilant about protecting themselves against influenza,'' she said.

Dr Carroll said vaccination is required annually, as the vaccine changes each year to cover the expected disease strains.
