POSTED: 5:28 pm CDT August 3, 2009
UPDATED: 5:34 pm CDT August 3, 2009

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Department of Public Health announced Monday that an Iowan died from the H1N1 flu virus.

IDPH said it would not provide any details of the case due to confidentiality.

"Our sympathies go to the family and loved ones of the individual who died," said IDPH Director Tom Newton. "For most people, the H1N1 virus is causing mild illness. This death reminds us that the virus continues to circulate in Iowa and does have the potential to cause severe illness and death.?

Officials said Iowans can help prevent spread of the virus, by using the following tips:

# Wash hands frequently, and always wash hands after coughing or sneezing.
# Cough or sneeze into a tissue, or your sleeve or elbow, not into your hands.
# If a person feels ill, they should stay home. Children should not go to daycare or summer camp if they feel ill.

H1N1 Death In Iowa

Updated: Aug 3, 2009 09:33 PM

Iowa has seen it's first death from the H1N1 flu virus.

State health officials say the person died Monday from the outbreak, which first surfaced in Iowa last spring.

No information is being released on the victim because of privacy laws.

Most cases of H1N1 in the state have been mild, but state health officials say this is a grim reminder that the illness has the potential to be serious.
