DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Department of Public Health announced Monday that an Iowan died from the H1N1 flu virus.
IDPH said it would not provide any details of the case due to confidentiality.
"Our sympathies go to the family and loved ones of the individual who died," said IDPH Director Tom Newton. "For most people, the H1N1 virus is causing mild illness. This death reminds us that the virus continues to circulate in Iowa and does have the potential to cause severe illness and death.?
Officials said Iowans can help prevent spread of the virus, by using the following tips:
# Wash hands frequently, and always wash hands after coughing or sneezing.
# Cough or sneeze into a tissue, or your sleeve or elbow, not into your hands.
# If a person feels ill, they should stay home. Children should not go to daycare or summer camp if they feel ill.
