45 Sioux City students sick with stomach illness

SIOUX CITY | Health officials are trying to figure out what made dozens of Sioux City grade school students come down with a gastrointestinal illness.

About 45 Bryant Elementary School students called in sick or went home early Thursday, said school district spokeswoman Alison Benson. Symptoms included vomiting and diarrhea.

Three staff members also became ill. The sickness was confined only to Bryant, 821 30th St.

The district alerted the Siouxland District Health Department on Thursday morning about the large number of absences.

School Sickness Spreads, Parents Urged To Keep Kids Home

(SIOUX CITY, IA) - A nasty stomach bug is floating around Bryant Elementary School keeping dozens of students home the past couple of days. The Siouxland District Health Department is investigating.

Thursday and Friday, about 80 students and three teachers at Bryant Elementary called in sick or went home with stomach problems. The symptoms are highly contagious causing more students to get sick if they don't stay home.

As of noon Friday, 33 more students stayed home or went home with stomach problems. School and health officials urge parents to make sure their kids don't go to school if they have any of these symptoms.

SIOUX CITY | The illness that sickened dozens of Bryant Elementary School students and staff last week was a norovirus, lab results released Tuesday show.

?This was what we were expecting,? said Siouxland District Health Department Deputy Director Tyler Brock. ?When people think they have food poisoning, there?s a good chance this is what it is.?
