FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec. 13, 2024
Resurgence of avian influenza in wild birds

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and its federal partners have been monitoring for the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Iowa’s wild birds since early 2022. After nearly a year without detections in sick or dead birds, Iowa has seen a sharp jump in affected waterfowl across the state mostly, north of Interstate 80 since early December, spurred on by the stress of migration and the severe cold.
-snip-
“We’ve learned a lot about how this virus behaves in the intervening years. Dabbling ducks are a great indicator species, and we started seeing the number of HPAI detections in apparently healthy hunter harvests ramp up in mid-November. Just a couple weeks later we started responding to sick and dead geese,” said Dr. Rachel Ruden, state wildlife veterinarian with the Iowa DNR.
-snip-
HPAI can also affect animals that consume infected carcasses, including other birds like eagles, and mammals, like red fox. Ruden said those who find five or more sick or dead flocking birds within a week should report their findings to their local wildlife biologist or state conservation officer. They are also interested in reports of solitary birds or mammals. Contact information is available online at www.iowadnr.gov under the About DNR tab on the homepage:

“We are encouraging the public to stay away from sick birds, especially waterfowl. We have seen some shift in their clinical presentation - some are still developing the ‘classical’ signs like twisting their heads and necks or swimming in tight circles. However, some are just quiet and seem unable or unaware to fly away when approached,” said Dr. Ruden.

She also cautioned against bringing these birds to licensed wildlife rehabilitators to limit further spread.

AMES, Iowa —

Animal Control in Ames is alerting residents about a potential bird flu outbreak among a flock of geese at Ada Hayden Park.

Animal Control Supervisor Ron Edwards emphasized the seriousness of the situation.

"This is all related to the avian influenza virus," Edwards said.

Animal Control has responded to about a dozen calls regarding sick birds, some of which have been euthanized due to their condition...

Bird flu outbreak hits Sweet Marsh public wetland

SUMNER, Iowa (KCRG) - An area of Northeast Iowa is seeing a renewed outbreak of avian flu.

During recent visits to the Sweet Marsh State Wildlife Management Area in Bremer County, outdoor photographer Kip Ladage started noticing birds killed by the virus—mature adults down to birds that hatched earlier this year.

“What I wasn’t expecting was that the first trumpeter swan that I would see succumbing to the outbreak would be a young-of-the-year and that that kind of hit hard,” Ladage said.

Jason Auel with the Iowa DNR said this particular outbreak started around December 18.

“We’re roughly in the neighborhood of about 75 birds [dead so far]. That first initial outbreak was a lot of birds out in a short amount of time. And since then, it’s been a few individuals every day.”...

Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Advises Keeping Pets Away from Sick or Deceased Wild Birds

DES MOINES, Iowa (Jan. 15, 2025) – The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is advising Iowa pet owners to keep their cats and dogs away from sick or deceased wild birds and animals. Pet owners should also discourage indoor/outdoor cats from hunting wildlife because of the ongoing threat posed by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1 HPAI) circulating within wild and migratory birds.

Tips to Help Keep Your Pets Healthy
• Keep pets away from dead wildlife, including birds.
• Do not allow your pet to kill or eat wildlife.
• Do not feed pets raw, undercooked, or unpasteurized frozen or freeze-dried milk, eggs, meat or organs.
- Cooking or heat-treating pet food to appropriate temperatures inactivates H5N1 HPAI.
- Freeze dried and frozen unpasteurized pet food is often considered raw and can pose a risk to pets.
• Keep your pet away from livestock including poultry and dairy cattle.
• Wash your hands and change your clothes after interacting with livestock and before interacting with pets.

Signs of H5N1 HPAI in Pets
If your pet exhibits clinical signs of HPAI, please contact your veterinarian. Cats and dogs can both get H5N1 HPAI, but cats are more susceptible. Clinical signs may include:
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Red eyes
• Respiratory signs (eye or nose discharge)
• Neurological signs (tremors, seizures, incoordination, blindness)
• Sudden death

Pet owners should always consult their veterinarians if they have questions about the health and wellbeing of their animals.

Guidance for Veterinarians
Iowa veterinarians should call the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at (515) 281-5305 if they see cats or dogs displaying signs of H5N1 HPAI and have ruled out other potential diseases.

Dozens of dead geese found at Union Grove State Park

JAN 17, 2025

Avian influenza (bird flu) is impacting wild birds worldwide and causing outbreaks in U.S. poultry and dairy cows, with human cases mainly reported in dairy and poultry workers. Presumptive positives have been reported in Tama and Marshall counties. But says Rachel Ruden, wildlife veterinarian at the Iowa DNR, who is based in Ames, the threat to the public is relatively low.

“The lion’s share of human transmission of this current strain have been associated with close contact to either sick poultry or sick dairy cattle,” she said.
-snip-
These birds, says Ruden, are presumptive positives for bird flu based on symptoms, and not actual testing, as she worked on the case at Riverside.

“If we can see sick birds displaying classic influenza signs visually — neck twisting, head tremors, and cluster or accumulating mortality of birds — those are presumptive positives for bird flu,” she said.
She added that reports of suspected bird flu peaked in Iowa from Dec. 8-21.
-snip-

She also responded to presumptive positive bird flu in Union Grove State Park in Tama County, alongside DNR wildlife management biologist Rodney Ellingson.
“I went up to view the site. There were approximately 40 dead geese at Union Grove throughout December/January that I’m aware of,” Ellingson said.
