Iowa health officials confirm first case of measles since 2019

A case of measles has been reported in Iowa, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The case was confirmed in an unvaccinated adult in central Iowa, according to HHS. This is the first confirmed case in Iowa this year.

Iowa last saw a confirmed case in 2019.​..

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) - The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services Tuesday confirmed the state's second case of measles in 2025.

The person is a man from Eastern Iowa and is vaccinated against measles. The Iowa HHS says he's between the age of 18-40. It's not known if he had traveled prior to the confirmed test.

An unvaccinated child in eastern Iowa tested positive for measles, according to a state news release on June 11.

This is Iowa's third measles case in 2025 and the second case reported in June.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services notified the public regarding the third case due to potential exposure in public areas. An investigation found that the third report is not related to the first two cases in Iowa, according to the HHS release.

(Des Moines) – The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed a case of measles in an adult resident of Eastern Iowa and is notifying the public of potential exposure locations. The individual is fully vaccinated and has no known link to the previous measles cases in Iowa, nor any recent travel outside the state. Iowa has a total of seven confirmed measles cases in 2025. As of July 8th, 2025, a total of 1,288 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the United States. Of these, 1,185 (92%) were unvaccinated, and 103 (8%) had received at least one dose of MMR vaccine.​..

(Des Moines) – The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed a case of measles in an adult resident of Western Iowa and is notifying the public of potential exposure locations. The individual is fully vaccinated and has no known link to the previous measles cases in Iowa, nor any recent travel outside the state. Iowa has a total of eight confirmed measles cases in 2025. As of July 15, 2025, a total of 1,309 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the United States. Of these, 1,204 (92%) were unvaccinated, and 105 (8%) had received at least one dose of MMR vaccine. Breakthrough cases typically experience milder illness and are less likely to spread the virus to others.

Iowa HHS and local health officials have identified locations visited by the individual while contagious, where the public might have been exposed to measles. Anyone present at the following locations during the listed date and time should monitor for symptoms of measles.​..

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa health officials have confirmed the state’s first case of measles in 2026.
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the case in a vaccinated adult who lives in central Iowa. The Polk County Health Department has since confirmed the person is a Polk County resident who recently traveled internationally.

Multiple Potential Exposure Locations Identified


POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The Polk County Health Department (PCHD) has confirmed a case of measles in a vaccinated Polk County resident who recently traveled internationally. This is the county’s first confirmed measles case in 2026.

In the uncommon case that a vaccinated person contracts measles, they typically experience milder illness and are less likely to spread measles to others. Around 93 percent of measles cases occur in people who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated.

Public health officials are working to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed. During the time the individual was contagious with measles, they visited several public locations (listed below).

​Des Moines, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and local public health agencies are responding to an outbreak of measles in southern Iowa. As of August 16th, twelve confirmed cases of measles have been identified, with evidence of person-to-person spread. Iowa HHS and local public health agencies are working closely with affected families and community leaders to identify illnesses, share information, and ensure access to vaccination. Measles can spread to anyone who is not immune and is exposed.

OTTUMWA, Iowa —

Iowa Health and Human Services is adding to its list of potential exposure locations for measles.

Ottumwa is now the latest town impacted. The most recent potential exposure location is the Pizza Ranch at 1791 Venture Drive in Ottumwa, between noon and 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14.

The list also includes five businesses in the Des Moines metro and two in Bloomfield.​..
