Internet access worries.

As all Kiwis will know there have been major power outages in both Islands .Yesterday 700.000 Aucklanders were without power for 8 hours and some Mainlanders are still waiting for power in freezing conditions. We know why(roughly)...wind damage in the north and snow damage in the south.I live in Auckland so suffered only a lack of hot coffee basically. But not having internet access all day, made me wonder how frustrated I (we) would be if there were a real problem happening globally, and no meaningful information were available.Eventually I went to a hardware store that reopened when they had power restored and bought a gas cooker and more candles.I was not the only one there with the same bright idea.I noticed today that the local supermarket has sold out of candles and the hardware store has no more gas cookers for now. This episode has taught me big lessons, and I am now WAY better prepared for any future eventuality.

Chicken Little.
I did not lose power or internet access, however during the snow storm there were power surges and I had switch off my machine, I didn't want any damage to my machine.
As soon as I saw the snow in the morning I cooked a dinner that could be easily reheated on my coleman if power was lost.

Re: Internet access worries.

I live in a region where power outage cause by Snowstorm is part of Life in the Winter.

I have replace my old cathodic monitor for a LCD, it uses less energy.

With a 12 volts battery and a ondulator to switch it to 110 volts,.

Thus with one battery I can work on my computer for about 8 hours.

Re: Internet access worries.

Thanks for bring up this topic, something I hadn't thought about. During a pandemic power sources will sketchy at best thus leading to surges. Probably good to get all essential (I consider a computer essential) electrical devices onto power surge protectors.
