Novosibirsk, Nov. 20 (REGNUM) - Novosibirsk is opening an international research center for bird flu problems.

"Novosibirsk Region will become the basic center for scientific research of avian flu problems in the scale of CIS,' Russia's chief medical officer Gennady Onishchenko said at the first international seminar of CIS experts on bird flu.

Mr. Onishchenko stated Novosibirsk Region was chosen for the seminar conducting as it had been there that unexampled measures of prevention of the bird flu spread were tested in 2005.

Moreover, Novosibirsk possesses tremendous scientific and research resources concentrated in the Siberian Department of Russian Academy of Science, medical and agricultural academies.
Owing to the reasons mentioned above, it was decided at the seminar that International center for bird flu problems would be set up in Novosibirsk. $10 m will be allocated for its foundation in 2006. The full project cost, which is to be finalized by 2008, is $45 m.
