International meeting on AI to be held in Bali


Denpasar, Bali Island (ANTARA) - An international meeting on "Key Partners on Avian Influenza and Pandemic Preparedness" will be held in Jimbaran, Badung District, Bali Province on Tuesday (September 11).

Three Indonesian ministers, namely Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Health Minister Dr Siti Fadilah Supari and Agriculture Minister Dr Anton Apriyantono would attend the meeting, Iqbal, a member of the meeting`s organizing committee said here on Saturday.

Around 150 participants from several countries, especially those which have been providing financial assistance to Indonesia for bird flu (avian influenza/AI) control, would join the international meeting on bird flu, he said.

Speakers at the meeting, which would be officially opened by Minister Aburizal Bakrie, would include David Naborro of UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Bayu Krisnamurthi, the executive chairman of the Indonesian National Commission on bird flu control and avian influenza pandemic preparedness.

Bali Governor Dewa Beratha would also speak in the meeting to explain about the Bali provincial administration`s efforts in dealing with bird flu on the touristic island.

Bali, which is visited by around 1.4 million foreign tourists annually, has been fully prepared for possible bird flu since the beginning of bird flu infection in Indonesia in 2005, Igbal said.

Two residents of Bali Island recently died of bird flu disease.

International health officials want to know what Indonesia is doing to stop the spread of avian influenza, which has claimed 85 human lives there and shows little sign of slowing. As Chad Bouchard reports for VOA from Jakarta, Indonesian officials are defending their efforts.

Officials from the United Nations' Avian and Human Influenza program are in Bali for a two-day meeting with the Indonesian government. They are assessing ways to improve the country's programs to prevent bird flu from spreading.

Indonesia's head of the National Bird Flu Committee, Bayu Krisnamurthi, says officials have are getting better at quickly detecting human outbreaks of the virus.

"We already tripled the units for surveillance in Indonesia, so the components of surveillance is becoming more and more complete," said Bayu. "It's not yet perfect for all of Indonesia, but at least we made some progress."

Avian influenza is endemic in birds globally. The most worrisome strain of the bird flu is the H5N1 virus, which has caused the greatest number of human cases and fatalities since the most recent outbreak began in Asia in 2003. More than 50 percent of people who have gotten sick with this type of bird flu have died.

Most human infections come from contact with sick fowl or their feces. In Indonesia there is greater worry of transmission to humans who live in close proximity to millions of backyard chickens.

Scientists fear that it is just a matter of time before the virus mutates into a form easily transmissible between humans.

On Monday, the World Health Organization warned a flu pandemic was inevitable, and cautioned against complacency among public health and disaster preparedness officials world wide.

The group in Bali is expected to establish a new set of guidelines for Indonesia on Wednesday.

NUSA DUA (BALI) - INDONESIA yesterday pledged to work closely with other countries to bring the deadly avian flu under control to prevent it from spreading beyond its borders into a pandemic that could threaten the world.

Dr Bayu Krisnamurthi, the head of the government's bird flu panel, said that Indonesia will restructure its poultry industry and step up public awareness campaigns as part of its plans to curb the virus which has killed 85 Indonesians.

Speaking at the end of a two-day meeting with key international partners here, he said: 'We are acutely aware that the eyes of the world are on Indonesia right now. The threat of a global pandemic is a real one.'

Officials from Japan and the European Union, as well as representatives of international aid groups such as Unicef, the United States Agency for International Development, the Australian Agency for International Development and the World Bank, were among those at the closed-door meeting.

'It is vital that we develop our international partnership in order to combat this threat,' said Dr Bayu, who is the chief executive of the National Committee for Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness.

United Nations systems coordinator for bird flu David Nabarro said: 'What Indonesia is doing to fight avian influenza is vital to the people of our world. We have to succeed.'

He said that Indonesia had a difficult task ahead in controlling the spread of the H5N1 virus which was endemic in its poultry population.

'That's why I keep coming back to Indonesia...my fourth time now...because Indonesia is facing a major problem with virus in poultry,' Dr Nabarro said.

Since the first human deaths from bird flu in Indonesia were recorded in July 2005, the casualty figures have continued to rise. The Indonesian government has been criticised by other countries in the region and the world for not doing enough to fight the virus.

The country has suffered the most bird flu deaths worldwide and the virus has infected 106 people, including those who died.
