Information officers charged to protect community against bird flu

The Desk officer, Avian Influenza control programme, Communication Component, Dango Oruwari has urged information officers to protect their community against Avian Influenza (AI) in the state.
Mr. Oruwari, who stated this during a one-day capacity building workshop on Avian Influenza for information officers, said if people will endeavour to report instances of sudden death of large numbers of birds immediately to the nearest health centre, it will help prevent the virus from spreading further in the community.
According to him, the objectives of the workshop was to broaden the knowledge of information officers about the threat of AI to Nigerian?s socio-economic development and to help individuals reflect on how to effectively disseminate AI.
Other objectives include, to highlight the natural, state and global challenge of AI and enable individuals remain the fore-runners for the control and prevention of AI in Nigeria.
The role of the media is to create awareness on AI response and also to initiate a discussion programme on AI.
He enjoined information officers to network with other organisations to create awareness on A1 at the Local Government Levels.
The Desk officer, Avian Influenza Control Project, Animal Health, Dr. Allswell Emefuru stated that about 381 cases of AI was detected globally, while out of these numbers, 241 was diagnosed dead.
Dr. Emefuru, however, urged well meaning Nigerians to thoroughly clean and disinfect equipment and vehicles entering and leaving the farm.
