Based on FluNet reporting (as of 18 October 2013, 11:35 UTC), during weeks 40 to 41 (29 September 2013 to 12 October 2013), National Influenza Centres (NICs) and other national influenza laboratories from 81 countries, areas or territories reported data.

The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 15 330 specimens.
598 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 420 (70.2%) were typed as influenza A and 178 (29.8%) as influenza B.

Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 97 (26.7%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 266 (73.3%) were influenza A(H3N2).

Of the characterized B viruses, 1 (100%) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 0 (0%) to the B-Victoria lineage.


Summary

During weeks 40 and 41, A(H3N2) viruses remained the predominant subtype globally, followed by influenza B and A(H1N1)pdm09. Influenza activity was low in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Influenza activity was low in Asia; A(H3N2) remained the predominant virus in China and co-circulated with influenza B viruses.

Influenza activity decreased in Oceania. A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 co-circulated in Australia while influenza B viruses were predominant in New Zealand.

In Africa, A(H3N2) and influenza B viruses co-circulated at low levels.
In Central and South America, influenza activity remained low with all three subtypes circulating throughout the region.

Influenza activity remained low in the North American and the European region.

The United States of America reported the first case of A(H3N2)v for the 2013/2014 northern hemisphere influenza season. A total of 19 cases have been reported in 2013.
