Influenza virus activity in the world, 19 August 2013

Based on FluNet reporting (as of 13 August 2013, 12:00 UTC), during weeks 30 to 31 (21 July 2013 to 3 August 2013), National Influenza Centres (NICs) and other national influenza laboratories from 70 countries, areas or territories reported data.

The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 17 669 specimens. 1561 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 1373 (88.0%) were typed as influenza A and 188 (12.0%) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 598 (52.2%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, 544 (47.5%) were influenza A(H3N2), and 3 (0.3%) were influenza A(H3N2)v. Of the characterized B viruses, 1 (50%) belonged to the B-Yamagata lineage and 1 (50%) to the B-Victoria lineage.


Summary

During weeks 30 and 31, A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses were the predominant virus detected followed by A(H3N2) and influenza B viruses.

Generally, influenza activity remained low in the northern and southern hemisphere with increased influenza activity reported by some countries in the southern hemisphere.

Influenza activity remained low in Australia and New Zealand with reports of increased influenza B detections while A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses co-circulated in New Caledonia (France).

In the African region, influenza B viruses were the predominant virus detected. South Africa continued to report A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses which co-circulated with A(H3N2).

Influenza activity remained low throughout the Asian region. A(H3N2) detections increased in China however, while A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 virus activity was reported from India.

In the Central and South American region, A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses predominated with some countries reporting co-circulation with A(H3N2) viruses.

Influenza activity remained low in North America and Europe. A total of 16 A(H3N2)v cases have been reported thus far in 2013 by the United States of America.
