Influenza virus activity in the world, 11 November 2013

Based on FluNet reporting (as of 5 November 2013, 10:10 UTC), during weeks 42 to 43 (13 October 2013 to 26 October 2013), National Influenza Centres (NICs) and other national influenza laboratories from 83 countries, areas or territories reported data.
The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 25 825 specimens.
992 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 746 (75.2%) were typed as influenza A and 246 (24.8%) as influenza B.
Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 164 (35.9%) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 293 (64.1%) were influenza A(H3N2).
Of the characterized B viruses, 14 (56%) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 11 (44%) to the B-Victoria lineage.
Summary
During weeks 42 and 43, A(H3N2) viruses remained the predominant subtype globally, followed by A(H1N1)pdm09 and influenza B viruses.
In general, influenza activity remained low in the northern and southern hemispheres, however some countries reported high influenza activity.
In the Oceania region, influenza activity decreased. All three subtypes circulated in Australia and New Zealand but in lower numbers compared to previous weeks.
Sporadic influenza activity was reported from Asia. A(H3N2) viruses remained the predominant subtype in China and were also detected in Lao People?s Democratic Republic and Thailand.
Influenza detections in Africa remained low. Countries in central and western Africa reported A(H3N2) detections while South Africa continued to report sporadic detections of influenza B viruses.
In the Caribbean and Central American region, influenza activity was high with reports of A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) detections. A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses were predominant in countries in the South American region and co-circulated with A(H3N2) and influenza B viruses.
Influenza activity remained low in Europe and North America, however Canada reported a slight increase in A(H3N2)detections.
