Influenza immunization is safe for children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and its use should be encouraged, according to a report published online May 6 in Pediatrics.
Pediatric patients with IBD often take immunosuppressive medication, and international clinical guidelines recommend that they receive the influenza vaccine, lead author Eric I. Benchimol, MD, PhD, and coauthors write. Yet immunization rates among these patients are relatively low because of uncertainty among gastroenterologists about the guidelines, observational reports of adverse effects in children with IBD, and insufficient epidemiological evidence of safety in this patient population.
Therefore, the researchers compared vaccine safety among children with and without IBD by observing the need for medical care in both groups after immunization. Dr. Benchimol, from the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Canada, and colleagues obtained information on immunization of patients with IBD and control patients from the Ontario Crohn's and Colitis Cohort and the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, respectively.
