Influenza hospitalisation stays in France from the medico-administrative database, PMSI, during the 2009/2010 pandemic
We used the hospital discharge database, the PMSI, in order to assess the severe influenza burden during the 2009-2010 pandemic, in France. The 2009-2010 data were compared with those from January 2007.During the pandemic, in mainland France, the number of hospital stays for influenza increased fivefold (n= 14,680) and tenfold for the intensive care units stays (n=1,748). The number of stays with acute respiratory distress syndrome and the number of pregnant women stays or deaths associated with influenza were higher. The average age was 5 to 10 years lower than during seasonal influenza for the patients admitted for flu, both in ICU and other wards. The length of stays was the same during the pandemic as for previous influenza seasons. The peak was observed in December 2009.In overseas territories, the evolution of the indicators was similar to what was observed in mainland France. The peak occurred in August for the Reunion Island, in September in French Guyana and Martinique and in October in Guadalupe.The PMSI data has confirmed an increase in the number of hospitalisations and a higher severity of the disease during the pandemic compared with the 2007 to 2009 seasonal influenza. The hospital discharge data base is exhaustive but available with delay, although during the pandemic the data have been made available 2 months after the patient?s discharge. This surveillance tools appears useful to complement and consolidate the results from other surveillance systems.
