Influenza death toll rises to 22: CDC

Taipei, Oct. 5 (CNA) Influenza claimed one more life in Taiwan last week, bringing the total number of flu deaths since July to 22, the center for Disease Control (CDC) reported Tuesday.
The figure was approximately the annual average for seasonal flu fatalities for the period.
The patient, who succumbed to an infection by the AH3 strain of the virus, was a 6-year- old girl from southern Taiwan, CDC Deputy Director-General Shih Wen- yi said.
The six-year-old was hospitalized Sept. 24, one day after developing symptoms including a cough and a high fever. She died Sept. 29, Shih said.
The victim had not been immunized against flu, nor was she taking the antiviral Tamiflu, Shih said.
According to CDC tallies, 15 of the 22 flu-related deaths were AH3 infections and seven were H1N1 infections.
Shih advised the public get vaccinated through the seasonal influenza inoculation
