Influenza A / H1N1 - 97% of the Italians say no to the vaccine
Influenza A / H1N1
Not only in Spain raise doubts about excessive alarmism,
Italians also wary of the vaccine and suspect that there are strong interests behind
Some 97% say NO to the vaccine, 59% is in favor of better hygiene, and 71% believe that there is a disproportionate alarm
Key-Stone discusses for the first time in Italy, through a rigorous and comprehensive survey, attitude, behavior and motivations for families refusing vaccination.
Although 17% said that at least one component of your family has suffered the swine flu, and that over 50% of the schools that their children attend have been affected, 97% are opposed to vaccination.
But hygienic practices have changed in 60% of cases.
February 2, 2010 - Press Release
Key-Stone has deployed an extensive survey on a representative sample of 600 Italian families.
The survey, which in Italy has been a great impact on all media, there are some evidence, also highlighted by the ANSA news agency, which show how the Italians have reacted with maturity and awareness, without observing irrational positions .
NO vaccination for 97%. Although prevention efforts have changed the hygiene habits, continued strong opposition to vaccination, only 5% of the families at least one member has been subjected to vaccination and the intention to do so in the future is almost irrelevant (2%). As for their decision not to vaccinate the distrust of vacinas in general (25%) or in particular who are not confident about the lack of experimentation and safety of this vaccine (24%) and the doctor's opinion against (21%) despite the indications received from the Ministry of Health.
The data highlight the role of the physician for 29%. The TV, as always, is a key means of information, but the role of the physician stands for 29% of cases, as well as for newspapers and magazines. Internet has been used in 17% of cases.
No fear for 80%. The reaction to the news has been mostly calm, confident and only 20% expressed concern or fear. Tranquility corresponds mostly with those who have requested information from their own doctor.
Informed and aware in 85% of cases. But the information received through different media leads us to the idea, widely shared, an excessive alarmism for 71% of respondents, probably created by "interests" of various types for 98% of these.
Improved hygiene for 60%. The spread of the virus has an impact on preventive behaviors for hygienic sanitary type 59% of families, of which 80% has increased the purchase of hand sanitizer. However, social mores have changed only by 12%, avoiding places with too much affluence, public transportation, etc..
Reactions and flu symptoms without fear for 96%. In 69% of families have shown symptoms of influenza illness (not just H1N1), but 43% thought, reasonably, to be treated in a normal flu, and let his usual evolution and only 4% has sense a real fear, going in very rare cases (1%) to the emergency.
At least one case of H1N1 infection in 17% of families. The disease has affected, in 79% of cases in children. And always regard to younger people, but has found the virus in 52% of the schools they attend the children of those interviewed, only 4% have been afraid of contagion and has left home to their children.
In conclusion, the Italians have shown a mature and conscious behavior, including families with children who are at increased risk of infection. Behaviors of calm but that, rather than superficial, in most cases have taken the proper precautions without becoming panic. Everything has been easier for the observed effects of the disease objectively more benevolent than expected in fact a vast majority of cases, and a pandemic certainly magnified by the public and private entities at the international level, World Health to the head.
A brief reflection
"This case appears from the point of view media-not so far from other phenomena that has been discussed and also mostly serious, with which we are particularly alarmed over the last decade (from SARS to avian avian and long before the "mad cow", etc.).
This may contribute to impair the credibility of international organizations, media and medicine in general. This comes spontaneously in mind the fable of 'Peter and the Wolf' by Aesop. By the time actually taking a risk is, Do they really know that taking behavior beyond the social alarm ...?"
