The implication for populations exposed to BSE is that there may be many more people infected by BSE prions in lymphoid tissues than have clinical disease, said Dr. Mead. ?These people pose risks for public health as they may be blood donors and have operations without precautions being taken.? Dr. Mead's lab has developed a blood-based assay that might be used to look at the prevalence of prion infection in the UK population. Other groups are also developing blood tests for prion infection.

With the spread of this in the US deer population I have wondered about other possible vectors other than the consumption of effected animals and animal products. What I was wondering about, in regards to the deer and small livestock such as goats, sheep and possibly pigs, were parasites. Specifically the sheep nose fly, the deer nose fly and parasitic worms. Mosquitoes are an obvious vector for so many diseases I wondered it these other possibilities have been somewhat over looked?

This is another reason I may be adding some catnip to the goat's feed. I plan to call my vet first and make sure that goats don't have a problem with mints. Considering some of the nasty weeds I have seen them greedily scarf up I doubt there will be a problem. While it may not help at this time I don't see where it could hurt.
