Infectious diseases in China killed 1,397 in July Health

Tokyo : China's Ministry of Health reported 1,397 deaths from infectious diseases in July, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday.

Some 750,000 infections were registered last month, including 10 cholera infections, the ministry said in a statement, according to Xinhua. No plague cases or deaths from cholera were reported in July, it said.

Plague and cholera are categorized as Class A infectious diseases -- the most serious class under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases. More than 350,000 cases of Class B diseases were also reported in the month, with 1,251 of them resulting in death.

Tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, dysentery, syphilis and gonorrhea were among the five most frequently reported cases in the month, accounting for 94 percent of all Class B cases. The death toll due to Class C disease was 146, such as hand-foot-mouth disease.

RoRo how does this number correlate to other countries and then extrapolated for the population difference?

That's a big question! From the wonder database between 1999 and 2006, an average of almost 5,300 Americans per month died of infectious and parasitic diseases. Not quite the same category as above, but enough to make you think that the Chinese number is probably referring to confirmed cases and may be a fraction of the real figures.

In India, approximately 30,000 children under 5 die each month from diarrhoea. Another 40,000 children die of pneumonia each month.

I'd guess that the Chinese figures are way low, but have no way to quantify how much.
