Indonesian NGO and the battle against bf -- a model for Egypt (other countries)?

A rather large part of the battle against bird flu in Indonesia seems to have been taken up by the Islamic organization, Muhammadiyah -- at least I see references to the organization with regard to bird flu over and over again.

Muhammadiyah's main activities are:
...religion and education. It has built Islamic schools in modern forms, aside from traditional pesantren. Some of its schools are also open to non-Muslims. Currently there are around 5,754 schools owned by Muhammadiyah....

It has also functioned as a charitable organization. Today it owns several hundred medical clinics and hospitals in Indonesia. Recently it has been active in campaigning about the danger of bird flu in Indonesia.

I don't know if there's anything like Muhammadiyah in Egypt, but I think the role an NGO can play in getting information about the dangers of bird flu to the "man on the street" should not be overlooked. In nations where many people might get a lot of their news and other information via their religious leaders when they go to church or to the mosque or wherever, organizations like Muhammadiyah should be encouraged to join in the battle against bird flu.

Muhammadiyah to help campaign on danger of avian flu
06/07/06

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The second largest muslim organisation in Indonesia , Muhammadiyah, will support the government`s bird flu fighting efforts by helping to disseminate information on the risks of Avian Influenza (AI), a spokesman said.

Sudibyo Markus, Muhammadiyah associate chairman, said the organisation was ready to mobilize all of its networks to support the government`s campaigns to combat the endemic disease.

"Muhammadiyah has about 500 hospitals and health clinics, 17,000 schools including medical schools, and a nurse academy as well as 350 social institutions," he said.

He said Muhammadiyah had taken the inisiative to support the government in its anti-bird flu campaigns because AI infection cases among people was tending to increase recently while the people`s awareness about its dangers was still low.

"People`s understanding about AI and its risks are still low. Distortian of information also sometimes happened and it makes people confused. Therefore, it is necessary to give people explanations on the endemic disease," he said.

He explained that in order to support the campaigns, his organization had prepared some materials for informng the public bout ways to prevent the spread of the AI virus.

The campaign materials were made by doing a deepen research to the infection of AI in Duren Sawit subdistrict of Jakarta, and consultate the result with top officials and international organisation who were involved in handling the cases such as WHO (the World Health Organisation) and FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organisation).

He said that the material handout would be sent to all of the Muhammadiyah`s networks across Indonesia to be disseminated soon.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Health Council Natsir Nugroho explained that the effort for disseminating the information on AI would be also carried out through workshops, training for fasilitators and medical officers as well as traing for trainers (TOT) program, he said.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said on the launching program that government had welcome warmly the Muhammadiyah`s initiative.

At the moment, there were at least 37 people were dead in Indonesia by the endemic.

"Without participation of community , then whatever medical theories could not be carried out effectively in controlling the endemic," she said.

The MUHAMMADIYAH CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE pioneered the Control Program of Bird Flu and the Threat of the influenza Pandemic

09 June 2006

Indonesia this year was in the quite serious condition faced the bird flu threat. Overseas the number of patients did not develop, but in Indonesia continued to improve. Moreover has been klaster [cluster] that was very big that is in Kab. Karo, North Sumatra. Although being found klaster-klaster, from results of the specimen inspection by the WHO laboratory in Hong Kong showed the cause of bird flu was the virus H5N1 that is from the chicken. This means that the spread of bird flu came from the chicken to humankind, not from humankind to humankind.

Because of that the key penanggulanggan him was separated between the chicken and good humankind in the city and in villages. His method was two that is destroying the chicken when having the chicken that was sick and died or his chicken was gathered now in a place that far from humankind. So I needed the community's offer, don't be waiting for the government. If the community found the poultry around it that was positive bird flu, must want to destroy his chicken personally without asking for compensation.

Was like this the statement of Menkes Dr. Dr. Siti Fadilah Supari Sp.JP (K) when declaring Soft Launching the Control Program of Bird Flu and preparations faced the Pandemic that was held by the Management of the Muhammadiyah Centre in Jakara, on June 7 2006. Accompanied Menkes in this agenda Dr. Sudibyo Markus, the Chairman of the MUHAMMADIYAH CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, Dr. Natsir Nugroho, the Chairman of the Health Council and Kesejahteran the MUHAMMADIYAH CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE's Community. Also was present, M. Junaedi, SE, the member the Commission of IX People's Representative Council-RI, Dr. Emil Agustiono from Komnas Bird Flu and the influenza Pandemic, Delegation of USAID and AUSAID Delegation.

We not need to very pompous, if could separate the chicken from humankind for 6 months, I was sure bird flu could be combatted. But this really was difficult because of causing the special policy namely the consequences of the very big cost. But if the initiative came from the community would not was felt. The government certainly did not want to cause problems for his people, but when hoped fully to the government then will spend our temporary time continued to race with the virus, continued Menkes.

Menkes expected the bird flu resolution really to have to dive in the problem prevented the spread from the animal to humankind by separating humankind from the chicken. For example in Vietnam while 6 months did not have the wandering chicken, until must import chicken from overseas but results of bird flu could be there controlled, said Dr. Dr. Siti Fadilah.

Regarding that, Menkes sent the appreciation and thanked you to the MUHAMMADIYAH CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE on efforts in fact helped the government in the health field especially in dealing with the TB, help during the tsunami in Prov. NAD, the earthquake in Prov. DIY and Central Java as well as the control of this current bird flu.

According to Menkes, efforts that were carried out by Muhammadiyah in line with the goal of KH. Ahmad Dahlan as the founder that is shared with the Indonesian nation not only with the resident Muhammadiyah then.

Menkes ask for to the Management of the Muhammadiyah Centre, in order to be able to put the control program of bird flu in the Muhammadiyah educational curriculum that had thousands of schools from TK to the tertiary institution. Empowerment of the Muhammadiyah resident to carry out the socialisation of Bird Flu by using the simple language and being easy to be understood, was believed in by Menkes really will help the Government.

Dr. Markus Sudibyo, the Chairman PP Muhammdiyah in his report stated, Muhammadiyah had 30 million followers, 500 hospitals and the medical clinic, 17.000 schools from the Kindergarten to the college, 197 tertiary institutions including 5 schools of medicine and 350 orphanages as the network that will be used by Muhammdiyah to hold the control activity of Bird Flu.

Muhammadiyah even seems to have mobilized bf outbreak response teams that are involved in culling, disinfection and vaccination as this (and many other) recent article shows...
