n Indonesian woman suspected of being infected with bird flu has died in the West Java city of Bandung, hospital sources there said today.

Samples from the 30-year-old woman have been sent for testing in Jakarta, said a staff member at Bandung's Hasan Sadikin general hospital who only identified himself as Herdi.

Two tests must come back positive for the H5N1 virus before a victim is confirmed as part of the official bird flu death toll in Indonesia, which is the highest in the world at 85.

The woman, who died yesterday, was showing symptoms of bird flu infection, such as fever, coughing, breathing difficulties and low red blood count.

Herdi declined to give further details, but the Koran Tempo said that the victim fell sick a few day after one of her pet birds died. Transmission usually occurs directly from birds to humans.

The kind of bird involved has not been identified.

If confirmed to be infected with the H5N1 strain of the virus, the woman would be the 86th human fatality in the country. Twenty-one other people have been infected by the deadly H5N1 virus strain that causes bird flu, but have so far survived.

H5N1 is endemic in birds across nearly all of Indonesia.

Scientists worry that the virus will eventually mutate into a form that is much more easily transmissible between humans, triggering a disastrous global pandemic.

Tests clear suspected bird flu death in Indonesia
(AFP)
25 September 2007

JAKARTA - Two tests on samples from an Indonesian woman feared to have died of bird flu at the weekend have cleared her of carrying the virus, a health ministry official said Tuesday.

"Both test results were negative," said Ningrum, a doctor on duty at the health ministry's bird flu information centre.

She was referring to a 30-year-old woman who died in hospital in the West Java city of Bandung on Saturday displaying symptoms of infection with the H5N1 virus.

Two tests, usually of samples of blood and tissue, must come back positive for the virus before a victim is confirmed as infected in Indonesia, where the death toll of 85 from avian influenza is the highest in the world.

Jakarta man latest bird flu victim
<exsl:string xmlns:exsl="http://exslt.org/common">Oct 1, 2007 6:43 PM</exsl:string>
A 21-year-old Indonesian man from West Jakarta has died of bird flu, taking the death toll from the virus to 86, a health ministry official said.

Experts are still investigating how the man contracted the virus, which is most commonly spread to humans through contact with sick fowl, Tini Suryanti, spokesman of the Jakarta health office, said.

"We don't know how he could have come in contact with sick chicken, since backyard poultry has long been banned by the city government," Suryanti said.

The victim, who died in hospital on Sunday, fell ill on September 18 but was only hospitalised a week later, the bird flu centre's Joko Suyono said.

"He was brought too late to the hospital. He was already suffering from pneumonia, and three days later he died," Suyono said.

Bird flu is endemic in bird populations in nearly all parts of Indonesia, where millions of backyard chicken live in close proximity to people.

The Jakarta government banned backyard poultry in February in a bid to stem a new flare-up in bird flu after four people died in the beginning of the year in the capital.

Indonesia investigates 86th bird flu death

10 01 2007

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia's health ministry investigated Monday how a 21-year-old man who died of bird flu last week contracted the virus, as confirmation he was infected brought the official toll from the H5N1 strain here to 86.

Ningrum, a doctor from Indonesia's bird flu information centre, said that the victim -- identified only by his initials "AR" -- died on Friday at a hospital in West Jakarta, but it was not known if he had been in contact with poultry.

"On the risk factors, we have nothing yet but a team (from the health ministry) is currently at his home," she told AFP.

While the usual mode of the transmission of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu is directly from an infected bird -- typically poultry -- to humans, scientists fear that the virus will eventually mutate into a form easily spread between people.

Such a development could trigger a global pandemic.

The latest victim tested positive for the virus in two separate tests, the requirement to be reported as a confirmed case in Indonesia, which is the country worst affected by the virus.

The man first showed flu-like symptoms 10 days before he died but was only admitted to hospital a week later, Ningrum said.

Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation, has now reported 107 bird flu infections, including 86 deaths, since it recorded its first case in July 2005.

Another victim died earlier this month on the island of Sumatra, while two people died on the resort island of Bali in August, stoking concerns of an impact on the vital tourism industry there.

Ningrum said that there were no further suspected bird flu patients being treated at the moment.

H5N1 is endemic in birds across nearly all of the archipelago nation.

Prior to the latest death, the World Health Organisation had recorded a human bird flu toll of 200. Besides Indonesia, deaths occurred in Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Iraq, Laos, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.

Indonesia has been sharply criticised for being slow to act in its fight to control bird flu, which has spread easily in a nation where many people keep chickens and other birds in their backyards and homes. (*)
