JAKARTA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A 47-year-old Indonesian man from an outskirt city of Jakarta was infected by avian influenza and was in critical condition in a hospital, health ministry said here on Wednesday.
Laboratories tests showed that the man was positively infected by highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, said Joko Suyono, official of the anti-bird flu center of the ministry.
The man has been treated in a bird flu-designed hospital of Persahabatan in East Jakarta since December 10 with fever, difficulty in breathing and cough, Suyono said, adding that he is now in critical condition. The case has put the total cases to 115 with 92 fatal in Indonesia, said Suyono. Indonesia has been making all its efforts to deal with the problem of spreading the virus.

A 47-year-old male from Tangerang City, Banten Province developed symptoms on 2 December and was hospitalized on 9 December.

The source of his exposure is currently under investigation.

Of the 115 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 92 have been fatal.

JAKARTA, Dec 13 (Reuters) - A Indonesian man from an area west of the capital Jakarta died from bird flu on Thursday, an official said, bringing the total number of deaths in from the illness in Indonesia to 93.

Runizar Roesin, head of the bird flu centre in Jakarta, told Reuters the 47-year-old man from Tangerang died on Thursday evening.

The man, who had kept ducks at his home, had tested positive for bird flu and was being treated at a hospital in Jakarta, a Health Ministry official said on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, a 28-year-old woman, also from Tangerang, died of bird flu after being treated at the same hospital.

Contact with sick fowl is the most common way of contracting bird flu, which is endemic in bird populations in most part of Indonesia.

Indonesia has had the highest number of human deaths from bird flu of any country. Experts fear that the virus could mutate into a form easily passed from person to person, killing millions of people worldwide. (Reporting by Mita Valina Liem; editing by Sara Webb)

Laboratories tests showed the man was positively infected by the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, said Suyono.
There were 115 infected cases in the hardest-hit country, with 93 fatalities. Although millions of chickens have been culled, the virus is now still endemic in poultry across the world's fourth most populous country.
Indonesia has grappled with difficulties in stopping the spread of the virus, including sprawling territory, the traditional way of raising chickens in the backyard and ineffective implementation of anti-disease regulations.
If the virus could mutate to a level capable of transmitting among humans, millions of lives would be put at risk and the world economy would suffer setbacks, experts warned.

JAKARTA (AP): An Indonesian man died of bird flu, bringing the death toll in the country worst hit by the virus to 93, a Health Ministry official said Friday.

Authorities were trying to ascertain how the 47-year-old man contracted the deadly H5N1 strain of the disease, which has infected 115 people in Indonesia.

The man began showing signs of illness on Dec. 2 and died Thursday night at a hospital in the capital, Jakarta, after being admitted with a fever, cough and other flu-like symptoms, said spokesman Joko Suyono.

He lived in the industrial town of Tangerang, 40 kilometers west of Jakarta.

Indonesia has recorded regular deaths from bird flu since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003 and its 93 deaths now account for almost half of the recorded fatalities worldwide, according to figures from the World Health Organization.

Almost all cases have originated from sick poultry, but experts fear it will mutate into a strain that can pass more easily from human to human. Indonesia, which has millions of backyard chickens, is a potential hotspot for a global bird flu pandemic, scientists have warned. (***)

A woman from Tangerang died of bird flu on Monday. "All the specimens in the neighbourhoods of both victims tested by the agriculture ministry were negative. The 76 specimens taken from the two areas showed negative results," he told reporters.

The virus is usually transmitted to humans from infected birds, but scientists fear it could mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans, sparking a global pandemic that could kill millions.
