JAKARTA, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government plans to get faster diagnostic kits for bird flu symptoms expected to arrive in March, as the death toll from the disease has climbed to 61, local press reported Monday.

Health minister Siti Fadilah Supari announced the plan on Sunday after Indonesia contributed the greatest number of the world's total bird flu-related death toll of 161, reported English newspaper The Jakarta Post.
"We are expecting that this diagnostic kit will be able to detect symptoms in patients before they suffer heavy breathing," she was quoted as saying.

Indonesia has recorded four deaths from bird flu since New Year's Day, with the most recent victim being a 27-year-old woman from South Jakarta.

In 2004, scientists in China announced they had developed a test that would detect bird flu infections in human within two hours, while previous tests took three to five days to confirm.

Scientists in Singapore and the United States have also announced the successful development of similar test kit. However, it is not clear from where Indonesia will buy such diagnostic kits.
