Bird flu virus infects chickens in Yogyakarta
YOGYAKARTA (Antara): Bird flu virus (Avian Influenza - AI) has infected a number of chickens and several birds in Yogyakarta.
The virus was first detected when 11 chickens had died suddenly in Gedongkuning, Kotagede, Yogyakarta, a local official said on Wednesday.
"Field officers have checked the dead chickens and confirmed that the chickens were infected with bird flu virus. Therefore, over the past two days we have culled some poultry in the area," Daryadi, head of the agriculture service's husbandry section, said.
On Tuesday, 43 chickens and three birds were culled. The chickens belonged to backyard farmers in Kotagede, Yogyakarta.The farmers would get compensation amounting to Rp 10,000 (US$1.1) for each chicken or bird having been culled.
The Yogyakarta authorities have provided disinfectant for spraying in backyard farms and bird markets in Yogyakarta.
Entering 2007, many bird flu cases have been found again.
Since the outbreak of this disease in Indonesia in 2005, some 79 patients have been confirmed to be infected with the virus. Of the total, 61 died. (***)
