Garut – A 7-month-old baby named Lena, rushed to dr Slamet in Kabupaten Garut, West Java, on early Saturday (26/2) and treated in bird flu isolation unit.

The baby developed coughing, fever and breathing difficulty.

Hundreds of chickens had suddenly died of bird flu H5N1 in patient’s neighborhood, Kampung Cangkuang, Desa Bagendit, Kecamatan Banyuresmi. She is reported to have contact with the diseased chickens.

Head of Livestock Division of Kecamatan Banyuresmi, Nenok Kusmiati, is being treated in the same hospital as bird flu suspect patient.

They both are receiving intensive medical care. Nose and throat swab samples have been sent to Ministry of Health Laboratory in Jakarta.

Yes, the symptoms for the patients seem the same, although I don't see how hospital officials could report such disparate ages. There is a big difference between a 3 (or 7 or 9) month old infant and a toddler that is three years old.

As always these breaking news stories have conflicting information so we need more information to sort this out.

Am I reading this correct that five suspect bird flu cases here died???

Or is that a cumulative total for the region over the past few years (which it might be because it talks of five confirmed cases with four deaths as well) and they are saying that over several years, there were 51 suspect cases with five deaths, 44 recoveries, and two now in hospital?

A quick look tells me that there have been more than 4 deaths historically in Garut. We need a chart for Indonesia like we have for Egypt. I will do that today.

If we are going for the second interpretation, then they are reporting four confirmed historical deaths and five more suspected ones (no samples? tested negative?) for a total of 9. I'm not sure why a fatal case would remain in the suspected category permanently, though. One would think it would either get confirmed or excluded, although your link indicates that six deaths are part of a cluster, so they might just be untested cases.

I was just a bit freaked that they might be reporting five new deaths.

The totals listed include all cases going back to 2006. Indonesian media reports often include historical totals in their reports and do not always make it clear that they are cumulative totals. Usually these totals are at the end of the article as filler.

Local cumulative numbers of H5N1 cases in Indonesia do not always correspond with officially reported numbers by WHO.

WHO reported two H5N1 deaths from the Garut area in 2006, and one in 2007. The fourth death that may be referenced in this news article was a 20 year old who died on August 6, 2006. Although noted in a WHO situation update, this death was not confirmed as H5N1 related by WHO.

The single H5N1 survivor from the Garut area that was confirmed by WHO was Umar Aup who was hospitalized on August 9, 2006 and reported in the same situation update.

Because suspected cases are haphazardly reported by the media, it is anyone's guess as to how many H5N1 suspected cases (deaths and recoveries) have occurred in the Garut Regency in the last 4.5 years.

A quick look tells me that there have been more than 4 deaths historically in Garut. We need a chart for Indonesia like we have for Egypt. I will do that today.

I started with 2005 since we were not online. I will make a chart for each year for a reference point.
