Tegal, Central Java ::: Bird flu kills native chickens

Tegal – A total 41 native chickens belong to people in Margadana, suddenly died. The Participatory Disease Surveillance and Response (PDSR) of Tegal examined the cloacal swab with rapid test kit and showed that those chickens died of bird flu (H5N1).
Chicken death was reported to have been occurred from 2-6 September 2011. Dead chickens showed bluish body and comb/wattle and white appearance of dropping. This incident occurred in the same neighborhood of Margadana. Source of infection is presumed from travelling chickens sellers.
The PDSR in coordination with Health Service and Livestock Service have conducted control measures such as disinfection, burning dead chickens and burying them, followed with administrating vitamin to healthy chicken.
Bird flu infection was identified in other village, Kalingangsa, in the mid of August. In that case dead chickens showed similar symptoms as in Margadana. The source of infection was newly bought chickens brought to the village without former quarantine inspection.
