Jakarta. Mount Bromo?s volcano alert status was raised to the highest level on Tuesday following a marked increase it its volcanic activity, a geologist said.

?We have recorded that Bromo?s activity has become more intense since November 8 and its fluctuations between shallow and deep volcanic earthquakes continue to increase,? said Raden Sukhyar, head of the Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry?s geological agency.

Sukhyar said Bromo?s status was raised twice on Tuesday, from ?alert? on Tuesday morning, to ?beware,? the highest alert level before an eruption, only eight and a half hours later.

?We want all people around Bromo to keep calm and not be provoked by eruption rumors,? Sukhyar said, adding that the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) is coordinating with the local government in case of emergency.

"We raised the status of Bromo to the highest red alert level at 3:30 pm (0830 GMT) today. There's a chance of an eruption soon," government volcanologist Surono told AFP.

Bromo started rumbling on November 8 and plumes of white smoke and ash were rising from the crater of the 2,329 metre (7,640-foot) peak on
Tuesday, according to a government website.

Anyone within three kilometres (two miles) of the volcano -- which lies about 120 kilometres (75 miles) south of Surabaya -- were urged to move to safer ground.

Residents around Mt. Bromo unfazed by minor eruptions

As Mt. Bromo continued shooting ash into the air in some minor eruptions since yesterday, residents living around the volcano have yet affected by the volcanic ash.

Ngadas village head Karono said most residents still do their activities as usual. The village is located 15 kilometers from the volcano.

Karono, however, advised the residents to keep watchful eye in anticipation of worsening situation.

"We suggest the villagers not to go out from their homes unless they have some urgent things to do," he said Saturday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

An official has warned people living on the slopes of Mount Bromo in East Java to be on high alert after a surge in volcanic activity on Wednesday.

Bromo was put on level 4 alert, the highest status, after it began erupting on Nov. 4. Twelve days later, the government downgraded it to level 3 alert, but the volcano sprang back into life on Saturday, hurling ash and smoke 2,000 meters into the atmosphere.

Gede Suantika, head of the Bromo emergency response team at the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), said that even though the alert status remained unchanged, residents in the area should take precautions.

He said the 2,329-meter-high volcano on Wedenesday was still belching thick clouds of ash 1,000 meters into the atmosphere, which were being blown to the north and northeast.

?The warning remains the same: Don?t go within 2 kilometers of the crater because it?s very dangerous right now,? he said.

JAKARTA -- Flights to and from Indonesian resort island of Bali have resumed after dangerous ash spewing from an Indonesian volcano abated, an official said Sunday.

?All international flights have resumed since yesterday. The volcanic ash no longer poses a threat,? the airport's air traffic operations manager Ketut Subamia told AFP.
