Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

So perhaps his symptoms are more mild due to the fact that the viral load was lessened because he was wearing protective clothing? Which to me suggests, if he does in fact have BF, that if he were not wearing protective clothing then he may be in much more dire straights.

"He is in an isolation room, doing fine. He has been suffering from a sore throat, fever and some respiratory problems. However, he wore a complete protection suit when dealing with a bird flu patient last week,"

Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

Indonesian authorities are now considering autopies to more accurately determine the disease progression of avian influenza. Autopies are not usually done due to Muslim relgious practices that require a quick burial.

So...what is everyone's personal assessment of this situation?

No extra worries here, not confirmed yet, accidents can happen.

When more doctors and other HCW are becoming positive , well ...time to follow the developments closely.

Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

I'm in the "waiting for more results" category too. Even if the HCW are positive it doesn't mean the virus is efficient. It could die out at the 2nd Human level.

Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

Since WHO has stopped reporting H5N1 cases in Indonesia at the end of January, there have been 10 additional, locally confirmed, cases. The last eight (8) have all died. Based on the news reports, they died between 1 and 11 days after admission, with most dying within 1-4 days of admission.

Didi Slamet Prihadi was only treated for four days before he died. The doctor would have to have been infected within that period. Similarly Marwiyah Permina Putri was only hospitalized for two days before death. The four nurses would only have been exposed over a period of two days.

Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

so we're looking at approx. 9 days until we know absolute result of their infections?

Pollack, MD <pollack@promedmail.org>Aileen was a very dear friend. Her sudden death will leave a big void in Public Health internationally. It is very difficult to find the words that would adequately capture what a truly wonderful friend and impressive, dynamic public health practitioner Aileen was.As a friend, they didn't come much better, as many who were fortunate enough to call her a friend would say.As a Public Health professional, the same applies; they just don't come much better. Her official titles included Professor of International Health at Curtin University of Technology and Deputy CEO of the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative. She also served as an expert consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) in many different capacities. In addition to her below- mentioned activities in SARS and avian influenza, Aileen was actively involved in the revision of the International Health Regulations, was on the Polio Eradication Advisory Committee, was the founding director of the Australian Field Epidemiology Training Program, and chaired more committees than one would imagine, all of which she did with ease, professionalism and a wonderful infectious smile and sense of humor. She will be sorely missed by many.Below are the early announcements of her death.--Marjorie P. Pollack, MDAssociate : Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General [edited]<http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/statements/2007/s07/en/index.html>WHO and the public health community mourn the death of Dr. Aileen Plant-----------------------------------------------Today, I would like to express my most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr Aileen Plant.Dr Plant, of Australia, was a renowned medical epidemiologist, an outstanding global public health leader, and longtime friend to the public health community. She was a path-blazing, respected lecturer, teacher and writer. Many at WHO considered her a mentor. She died suddenly yesterday at the Jakarta airport, traveling home from a WHO meeting.Dr Plant made enormous contributions to the health and welfare of people in her country, and to the world. In the very early weeks of the SARS outbreaks in Viet Nam, she was instrumental in analysing the threat. She was a core part of the team which designed the influenza pandemic containment plan. Just this week in Indonesia, she helped to bring consensus on the challenging issues surrounding avian influenza virus sharing and ensuring access to influenza vaccine for developing countries. She never hesitated to travel to the places she was needed. And we needed her many, many times in extremely challenging situations. She brought a deep sense of duty, commitment, vast experience, ethics, courage, and professionalism to her work. Those who knew her described her as "the best," "the beating heart" and a "true servant" of public health. We and many others will miss her personally and professionally very much.:tiphat:

Wait and see, too.

Regarding the group of 4 HCWs (the mid-wife, et. al.), all work in what I imagine to be a sort-of local clinic -- the Jetis Community Health Centre presumably in the Jetis Subdistrict. If they also live locally, they could also very well be exposed to sick poultry (or cats or whatever), too. Heck, they might even have some backyard poultry themselves!

Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

I have my head up and the antennae are quivering but have not gone into town to purchase the last minute items on my list. In other words I am alert but not convinced 'this is it'. It is possible she/he doesn't have H5N1.

Wait, have the virus confirmed or, see if the virus infects other HCW's or family members of the stricken doctor. If I start to see other HCW's moving into isolation in the hospital I will be worried.

Re: Indonesian doctor hospitalized for suspected bird flu

I'm not panicking yet. It hasn't gone exponential. Until then, it's just another disease.

As long as patients are still being admitted to hospitals, rather than abandoned outside them, all is well.
