A "walet" is a kind of a bird -- a swift or swiftlet -- the kind of bird that builds the nests that birds nest soup is made from.

Traditionally, the nests were collected in the wild (from caves), but apparently in Indonesia (and other Asian countries) people have started to build 'houses' for the swifts so they can harvest the nests more easily. I didn't know that 'til now -- learn somethin' new everyday!:
Some bird-nest merchants in southeast Asia (Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia etc.) have started to raise and breed the swiftlets in house-like structures. They build the shelters to attract wild swiftlets to build nests in them. The wrong kind of nests are then destroyed along with the eggs inside. Over time, the selection process leaves behind a colony of swiftlets that produce the right kind of nest for the trade. "House nests" are priced much lower than "cave nests" due to the risks involved in harvesting the latter.

Edit: This story is actually about Sulawesi, btw, and not Java.

Special report: Global fight against bird fluhttp://www.chinaview.cn/wjb0604/

JAKARTA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian doctor who had treated a bird flu patient was hospitalized for developing bird flu symptoms in the West Java capital of Bandung, raising worries of human-to-human transfer of the deadly virus, local press said Friday.
The 29-year-old doctor with the Bandung's Hasan Sadikin Hospital has been isolated at the intensive care unit for bird flupatients since Thursday, and he had a history of contact with a bird flu patient who died last week at the same hospital, reported leading news website Detikcom.
His blood sample is now being examined at the Health Ministry's laboratory in Jakarta for confirmation.
Hasan Sadikin Hospital director Cissy Prawira said the hospital applies strict safety procedures in handling bird flu patients and requires all medical staff to wear protections like eyeglasses, masks and gloves. "Up to now human-to-human transmission (of bird flu) remains a controversy due to the absence of proof," he was quoted as saying. The hospital is now treating two other bird flu patients, including two children.

I don't think so. This doc is from the Bandung Hasan Sadikin Hospital while the other 4 are from the Jetis Community Health Centre. The ages don't match, either.

So, I count 5 HCWs as bf suspects in Indonesia, then....

here is influentia2's post from FW.Says they were getting blood test but no symptoms reported Marwiyah more info Liputan6.com, Palembang: the Source of the spread of bird flu that killed Marwiyah the daughter from Palembang, South Sumatra, till Thursday early afternoon (29/3), still was mysterious.
The cat around the Marwiyah residence then was checked.
Although being not yet found by the case of the spread apart from the poultry, it was worried about currently the cat could also become the source penular [read: Bird Flu was Still becoming the Threat].
Was different to the case of the spread of the virus avian other influenza, around the Marwiyah house was not found the poultry.
Then, apart from checking the kept Marwiyah cat, the official of the local Health of the Service planned to comb several places.
Including the location of the real Marwiyah work lecture and the place market he normally buys the piece chicken.
All that in order to ascertain this deadly virus origin.
The correspondent SCTV Ajmal Rokian and Yanuar Ichrom reported," the example of blood of eighty medical staff and several neighbours who it was suspected had been touching with Marwiyah also was researched".
Four nurses who had been directly touching with Marwiyah, evidently could experience hot high for three days.

Re: Indonesia - JAVA - Mar. 20+

This is extracted from an earlier post from Treyfish concerning the death of Didi Slamet Priyadi (16F) in Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung:

"However before being sick, Didi did not have the story of contact with the poultry.
"Poultries that were maintained by the resident Eretan then not there are those that died suddenly."
Moreover after being carried out rapid test against the poultry, results of the negative, he added.
Yudhi said, now the spreadthrough this III phase, that more enabled was the spread through the waste of the poultry to humankind.
Yudhi considered, Didi's death resulting from bird flu was it was thought still mysterious."

It may be noteworthy that it was Didi's treating doctor who is now a suspected BF case. If Didi cannot be connected with poultry (or cats?) we may have H2H2H.

Reuters

JAKARTA, March 30 (Reuters) - A doctor who had been treating a 15-year-old boy who died from bird flu is being treated in an isolation ward after developing symptoms of the disease, a hospital official said on Friday.

The doctor had treated the boy, from Indramayu in West Java, at a hospital in Bandung. The boy died on March 25 from the H5N1 virus, the official said.

"He is in an isolation room, doing fine. He has been suffering from a sore throat, fever and some respiratory problems. However, he wore a complete protection suit when dealing with a bird flu patient last week," Doctor Yusuf Hadi, the head of the bird flu department at Hasan Sadikin hospital in Bandung, said by telephone.

"Two or three days after having contact with the boy, he suffered from fever. But now, he is OK, he does not have fever anymore. He has been treated as a bird flu suspect together with a woman and two children."

Test results for the four were pending.

Indonesia announced five more deaths from bird flu this week, taking the confirmed human death toll from the H5N1 virus to 71, the highest in the world.

The virus is endemic among fowl in many parts of Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country. Human cases generally involve contact with infected birds.
