Two Indonesians die after testing positive for bird flu <!-- END HEADLINE -->
<!-- BEGIN STORY BODY -->Tue Mar 27, 3:33 AM ET

Two people in Indonesia died after testing positive for bird flu, with further tests being conducted to confirm the initial results, the country's health ministry said Tuesday.
A 22-year-old female university student died on Saturday and a teenage boy on Sunday, a spokeswoman from the ministry's bird flu information centre said.
A 39-year-old man had also tested positive preliminarily and was being treated in Surabaya, the country's second largest city, the centre said.
The deaths would take the toll in the country worst-hit by the disease to 68 if the virus is confirmed as the cause of death.
Most human cases have occurred after contact with sick birds. Indonesia has banned the popular practice of keeping chickens in backyards in the capital, Jakarta, in a bid to curb more human cases.
The city is currently hosting a World Health Organisation (WHO) bird flu meeting intended to resolve a dispute between the UN body and Indonesia over sharing virus samples for key tests.
Indonesia wants new rules to govern the development of human vaccines from the samples to ensure that poorer nations can afford them. It fears multinational drugs firms will otherwise produce expensive treatments.
"The system places developing countries at a potential disadvantage in terms of price access and supplies," Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said on Monday. "The laws of the system should be modified."
Indonesia said in February that it had stopped sharing samples with WHO reference laboratories, a process said key to fighting human flu. It wants a legal guarantee that they will not be exploited for profit before resuming.
Indonesia has already signed a cooperation agreement with US company Baxter International to jointly develop a human bird flu vaccine in a bid to ensure it benefits from a future treatment.
The WHO says the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has infected 281 people and killed 169 of them, mostly in Southeast Asia.
Scientists say multiple strains of the disease originated in southern China and spread elsewhere.
They worry the H5N1 strain could mutate into a form easily spread among humans, leading to a global pandemic with the potential to kill millions.
The fear stems from the lessons of past influenza pandemics. One in 1918, just after the end of World War I, killed 20 million people worldwide.

Three people in Indonesia have died from birdflu taking country's death toll to 69

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/6501797.stm

Three people in Indonesia have died from bird flu, taking the country's death toll to 69, health officials say.
The virus claimed the lives of a boy aged 15, a 22-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man in separate parts of the country, the health ministry said.

Indonesia has the world's highest death toll from the disease.

Jakarta reached an agreement with the World Health Organisation on Tuesday to resume sharing samples of the bird flu virus for research.

The Indonesian government had called a halt to the sample sharing in December amid concern that they would be used by drug firms to produce costly vaccines that developing countries could not afford.

But, after two days of talks, WHO officials said they had "struck a balance" between the need to continue sharing the virus samples and addressing the concerns of poorer nations.

Under the deal, drugs companies will require the consent of countries to access their virus samples.

Bird lover

Indonesia's health ministry said tests had confirmed the three deaths.

The 22-year-old woman died on Saturday in southern Sumatra, followed by the teenage boy in West Java on Sunday and the 40-year-old man in East Java on Wednesday.

One health ministry official told Reuters news agency the man from East Java had been a bird lover.

"On March 11, his and neighbours' chickens died suddenly. The test showed that they were infected by avian flu," Muhammad Nadirin said.

Since the H5N1 virus emerged in South East Asia in late 2003, it has claimed nearly 170 lives around the world.

There are fears the virus could mutate to a form which could be easily passed from human to human, triggering a pandemic and potentially putting millions of lives at risk.

Here's a couple of maps of 4 bf patients who are all from in/around Mojokerto -- within a ca. 15 mile radius of the city. The sub-districts that they're from have been indicated -- couldn't find the exact locations of the villages -- they must be pretty small.

Siti Nur Aini is from Dusun Sumberpandan [hamlet], Desa Mojotamping [village], Kecamatan Bangsal [sub-district], Kabupaten Mojokerto

Wotono Hadi is from Desa Sidogede, Kecamatan Jetis, Kabupaten Mojokerto

Sukran & neighbor Satuman are from Dusun Bekuk, Desa Jabon, Kecamatan Samben [Kesamben], Kabupaten Jombang

Kabupaten Jombang (Sukran & Satuman) is immediately to the west of Kabupaten Mojokerto (Siti & Wotono Hadi) -- they're right next to each the way that I've positioned the two maps below.
