Bird flu kills Indonesian woman, raising country's death toll to 62

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) --
A 19-year-old Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, a senior health ministry official said Saturday, thus raising the country's death toll to 62.

The woman, from a village in West Java province, died on Jan. 19 after hospitalized for three days in the town of Garut, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of capital Jakarta, said Nyoman Kandun.

"She had contact with death poultry six days before hospitalized," Kandun said.

</TD></TR><TR><TD><!-- Story-MediaBoxPosition: 0 empty -->JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- A 19-year-old Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, a senior health ministry official said Saturday, raising the country's death toll to 62.
The woman died on Friday after being hospitalized for three days in the town of Garut, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of the capital, Jakarta, said Nyoman Kandun.
"She had contact with dead poultry six days before being hospitalized," Kandun said.
The woman's death is the fifth human bird flu fatality in the country since Jan. 9. Before that, Indonesia had not recorded any cases for six weeks - a lull that led some Indonesian officials to say they were succeeding in beating the disease.
The spike in cases has prompted the government to plunge into an all-out campaign to clear several provinces - with the highest number of bird flu cases - of fowl, starting on Friday with the capital, where four people had died in the past week.
"Quick and concrete actions are needed to prevent more victims," Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso, who goes only with one name, told el-Shinta radio station on Saturday.
He gave Jakarta residents two weeks to surrender or sell their birds before officials would go door-to-door confiscating fowls to rid its teeming streets of backyard chickens.
The governor also said Jakarta had plans to relocate its traditional bird markets from downtown areas, but gave no details.
There are estimated to be around 350 million backyard chickens throughout Indonesia, many of which are kept outside houses in the capital and surrounding towns.
The health minister said last week that nine other provinces hard-hit by bird flu would also soon ban chickens from residential areas.
Bird flu remains hard for humans to catch. But international experts fear it may mutate into a form that could spread easily between humans and potentially kill millions around the world, including in wealthy nations that have so far been spared human cases.

"Six days before she got sick she had contact with a sick chicken that, according to the agriculture department's rapid test, was also positive for bird flu."
Most human bird flu cases have resulted from contact with infected fowl.
Indonesia, the world's fourth-most-populous country and one that stretches across 17,000 islands in an archipelago as wide as the continental United States, faces an uphill task in fighting the virus.
Millions of backyard fowl live in close proximity to humans and health education campaigns have often been patchy and rules difficult to enforce.
This week a campaign began to rid the Indonesian capital of such fowl but it got a mixed reaction from residents. Some welcomed the culling amid health concerns but others worried about losing a key source of income.
Bird flu remains essentially an animal disease, but it has infected nearly 260 people worldwide since late 2003, killing more than 150, according to the World Health Organisation, and sparking fears of a pandemic.
Since 2003, outbreaks have been confirmed in about 50 countries and territories.

Indonesian woman dies of bird flu
20-Jan-2007

An Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, raising the country's death toll from the disease to 62, a health ministry official has said.

I Nyoman Kandun, the director general of communicable diseases, confirmed the death toll and said some 80 people had been infected by the disease overall.

Titin, 19, from Pangatikan village, Wanaraja district, West Java, was reported to have handled sick chickens, a health ministry official told AFP.

"There are no reports yet of other infections near where she lived," Runizar Roesin, head of the bird flu centre said.

"We are now sending an investigation team to carry out thorough tests in the area," he said.

"(Titin) was treated in a hospital in Garut from the 17th and died Friday morning at 10:50 am (0350 GMT)," another official from the centre said, adding that the village head had reported many chickens died between January 8 and 17.

"The lab confirmations only came this afternoon in that she positively died of bird flu," said the official, who declined to give his name.

Indonesia has the world's highest toll of human deaths from bird flu.

The vast majority of cases have occurred after contact with infected poultry.

Indonesia's efforts to curb the spread of bird flu have been hampered by the reluctance of some poultry owners, especially backyard farmers, to hand over their sick or potentially infected birds for slaughter.

"Starting February 1, there should be no more poultry in residential areas, except pets with health certificates," minister of agriculture Anton Apriantono was reported by detikcom news portal as saying.

Apriantono also said that there should not be any slaughter house near residential areas.

"It should be hundreds of metres from people's homes, if possible out of Jakarta," he said.

However, the move still leaves farmers unconvinced.

"What is the guarantee that after the poultry depopulation, the flu epidemic will stop? Nothing. We think the government is too hasty," national chicken farmers association secretary general Herry Darmawan told detikcom.

Darmawan said protein from chicken is the cheapest, and mass cullings will cause major loss not only to farmers but also to poor people.

Backyard poultry will be banned from Jakarta from February 1. The ban will be extended to eight other provinces across the central island of Java, which includes Jakarta, and neighbouring Sumatra.

Jakarta started a mass cull of poultry on Friday.

H5N1 has killed around 160 people worldwide since late 2003 and triggered the mass slaughter of tens of millions of poultry. ? AFP

Re: Indonesia - Java (incld Bandung)

Previous posts concerning Titin have reported her as 31-32years old (see http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15037 (MHSC's suspected/confirmed list).

Now she is reported as 19.

Titin (32) is "resident of Cikuni Village, the Wanaraja Subdistrict"
Titin (19) is "Pangatikan village, Wanaraja district"

One case or two?

Huh. Something's not right there. Good catch, Richard!

I'm gonna guess that the 19 is a mis-report or a typo in the AFP article -- in the past I've found that local reports have usually had info correct, whereas things can get 'lost in translation'.

On the other hand, could be we're looking at two cases here. Something to keep in mind and keep an eye out for.

OK - I've seen 19 from several different local sources, but they could be feeding off each other. Else 31-32 was the typo?

I'm betting two cases and a common name.
