Indonesian woman dies of bird flu, 4 others treated

Reuters
Friday, January 12, 2007; 12:25 AM

JAKARTA, Indonesia (Reuters) - A 37-year-old Indonesian woman has died of bird flu and four people have been treated for symptoms of the disease, a hospital official said on Friday.

The woman, from Serpong town in western Java, had been diagnosed as positive for the virus earlier this week. Her death takes the country's human death toll from bird flu to 59.

"The woman died yesterday at 7:35 p.m. (1235 GMT) because of organs malfunction which is caused by (bird flu) virus H5N1," Muchtar Ichsan, chief of bird flu management at Persahabatan Hospital in Jakarta, told Reuters.

The woman's husband and their son as well as two other women had been treated since Thursday at the same hospital for bird flu symptoms, he added.

The women have been placed on a respiratory device and their condition is not good, he said.

One of them, aged 22, had tested positive for bird flu, while results for the others were still pending, said Runizar Ruesin, head of the bird flu information center at the health ministry.

Indonesia leads the world in bird flu deaths, and has had 76 confirmed cases.

Officials say efforts to contain the virus are having some success and the number of provinces where it is present in fowl, the usual source of human infection, has fallen sharply.

Health ministry official Joko Suyono told Reuters earlier in the week that the woman who has since died had bought a live chicken and slaughtered it at her house, but it was unclear whether this was the cause of the infection.

2 more Indonesian women die from bird flu

2007/1/14
JAKARTA/TOKYO/HONG KONG, Agencies

Two more Indonesians have died from bird flu, a health official said Saturday, pushing the toll this week to four in the latest cases to strike the country worst hit by the virus.

The cases underscore the threat posed by the virus in Indonesia, which was criticized for being slow to react to H5N1 when it first appeared in poultry stocks and among backyard chickens in 2004.

One of the two latest victims was a 22-year-old woman who died early Saturday while the other victim -- also a woman -- died late Friday, said Nyoman Kandun, the Ministry of Health's director general of communicable disease control. Both had been treated in the same hospital in Jakarta, the capital.

The 22-year-old woman came from the industrial town of Tangerang near Jakarta, the same village as a 37-year-old woman and a teenage boy who died earlier in the week.

"We keep warning people to be careful in handling chickens," Kandun said. "The source of the virus is from chickens. As long as there are chickens around with bird flu, then it is dangerous for people living nearby."

The deaths bring Indonesia's tally of human fatalities to at least 61 -- more than a third of the world's total.

Kandun said none of the four victims this week were known to have had contact with each other and all were believed to have caught the virus directly from chickens.

He said the son of the 37-year-old woman was also suffering from the virus and was being treated in hospital. His condition was deteriorating, said Kandun.

"However, there is no evidence that he got bird flu from his mother," Kandun said. "There has been no human to human infection."

Japan, meanwhile, said Saturday it had confirmed a case of bird flu at a poultry farm in the southwest of the country, but could not immediately determine if the outbreak was due to a highly pathogenic strain of the virus.

Some 3,800 chickens have died on the farm in Miyazaki prefecture since Wednesday, an outbreak that if confirmed as due to the lethal H5N1 strain, would be the first in Japan since 2004. There were no reports of human infections.

A Miyazaki prefectural official said that tests showed that the chickens were infected with an H5 subtype of the virus, but further testing was needed to determine whether the virus had the N1 component that would make it the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain or the less lethal H5N2.

Local authorities have independently from Saturday started sterilizing areas near the poultry farm, another official at the Miyazaki government's livestock section said.

The Agriculture Ministry in a statement said that all birds at the farm, which originally had over 12,000 birds, will be destroyed from Sunday.

In Hong Kong, a dead bird found in the city has tested positive for a milder strain of the bird flu virus, the health authorities said Saturday.

"Preliminary testing of a dead bird ... has indicated a suspected case of H5 avian influenza," a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said in a statement.

Further tests are now being carried out on the carcass of the Crested Hoshawk, which was found by a member of the public, the statement added.
