BANDUNG (Antara): A three year old child was rushed to a hospital in West Java capital of Bandung Saturday after the child was suffering from symptoms posed by bird flu patients: high fever, cough, and respiratory problem.

Antara news agency reported that the patient, who was identified only as Hn, was admitted to the state-owned Hasan Sadikin Hospital at 10:30 a.m. and he had received an intensive treatment.

"According to relative, the patient used to have contact with poultry. Therefore, the patient was treated as a bird flu suspect," he was quoted as saying Saturday, adding the patient was given tamiflu.

Hn's blood has also been sent to a laboratory owned by the Health Ministry in Jakarta for further examination, according to the official.

Indonesia has recorded 74 human infections of the H5N1 strain of the virus, of whom 57 have died - the highest number in the world - since the disease began ravaging Asian poultry stocks in 2003.

International experts have accused Indonesia of not doing enough to tackle the virus, which they fear may mutate into a form that could spread easily between humans and potentially kill millions globally.

A total of 157 people have died globally since the 2003 outbreak, according to the WHO.
