Bird Flu Kills Woman in Indonesia; Death Toll at 64 (Update1)

By Berni Moestafa

Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Bird flu killed a 20-year-old Indonesian woman today, bringing the country's death toll from the lethal H5N1 strain of the virus to 64, an official at the Health Ministry said.

``The woman was confirmed of having contracted bird flu. She eventually died,'' I Nyoman Kandun, the ministry's director general of disease control and environment, said in a telephone interview from Jakarta. The woman from West Java's Garut regency had contact with chickens that died of bird flu, he said.

Her death marks the 64th fatality from the H5N1 strain of avian influenza in the Southeast Asian nation, the highest toll in the world. So far, 84 Indonesians have been infected by the H5N1 virus, Kandun said.

The virus is a threat mainly to birds at the moment, though it may mutate and gain the ability to spread between people, experts say. The World Health Organization said on Feb. 6 that the risk of a pandemic, which could kill millions, has not increased as the virus has resurfaced.
