JAKARTA (JP): Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said Wednesday the government would not take extraordinary measure against bird flu this year.
Aburizal said the current measures were sufficient to contain the spreading of bird flu in the country.
"We have been applauded by international agencies for our measures to handle the bird flu in the country," he said in a press conference.
A-14-year-old boy died in a hospital in Jakarta on Wednesday after being confirmed to be infected with bird flu virus for days. He was the 58th dead victim of bird flu virus in the country. (mtr/iwa)

For some Jakarta households, backyard farming a way of life

The life of Ahmad Toha's family of six practically revolves around the rooster, two hens and several chickens in the front yard of their small home in Jati Padang, South Jakarta.
The rooster wakes them up, the hens occasionally lay eggs for their omelettes and the chickens are Toha's youngest son's playmates.
Backyard farming is an old tradition brought from Toha's native town of Lamongan in East Java. It is both a cultural hallmark and way to make ends meet.
"I have lost count of how many hens I've kept as we have so often bought new ones when we ate older ones," said the 34-year old security guard. "We rely on them to keep us fed on low days."
"As long as they are bathed regularly, I do not think that they can be infected with bird flu," Toha said.
Even though backyard poultry farming has once again led to a fatal case of bird flu, it looks like it will take more than an occasional infection to separate Toha and the city's non-commercial poultry breeders from their favorite animal.
A 14-year-old West Jakarta boy died from the disease Wednesday. He was the country's 58th bird flu victim.
There are no official numbers on backyard farmers in the city, but the fact that it's not unusual to see chickens while walking in a kampong suggests the scale of the problem.
It's a problem that so far has been addressed only when there are fatalities.
Faced with the complexities of curbing backyard farming, the Jakarta Agriculture and Husbandry agency will not issue a regulation on poultry breeding and distribution until mid-2007, agency head Edi Setiarso said Thursday.
"And it seems that we cannot just ban backyard farming. We can only issue technical regulations like the distance from residential areas and how to build proper chicken coops," Edy said.
Unlike Vietnam and Hong Kong, which have completely banned backyard farming, Indonesia has been slow to contain the spread of the H5N1 virus. At the same time, the virus has begun showing subtler clinical symptoms in chickens, which makes early detection even more difficult.
"There are no longer massive fatalities in chicken or clinical symptoms like bleeding. Instead, the symptoms have become milder, such as a drop in the number of eggs laid," said Trisatya Naipospos, vice chairwoman of Indonesia's National Committee for Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (Komnas FBPI).
"We must be alert since even a seemingly healthy chicken can be a reservoir (of the virus)," she pointed out.
If so, Toha's healthy rooster and hens may need more than regular baths to keep them H5N1-free.
As city backyard farmers live on small lots, requiring them to keep their poultry at a certain distance from their houses might be impossible.
A pilot project carried out by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Sulawesi could be a model for a dense urban area like Jakarta.
The community coop project taught backyard farmers to share a common area where their poultry were kept in smaller numbered cabins and tended by a keeper who was paid collectively.
Designing smaller community coops in Jakarta's kampongs could be a transitional phase before completely banning inner-city backyard farming.
The way in which poultry is distributed is also part of the problem.
As many as 400,000 chickens enter the Jakarta market every day from places such as Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Cianjur, Sukabumi, Bogor and other places in Central and East Java. Because they travel in open containers and in close quarters with humans, they be a means of spreading the disease.
Komnas FBPI chairman Bayu Krishnamurti said last December that his office would draft a new regulation to restructure Indonesia's poultry industry.
